exhaust gases too hot?

sup guys, im puzzled on something..i actually searched a couple of threads but none that specifically answered my question and i know how you guys say search, well i did and im still in question..

well my question is, can exhaust gases be too hot and can cause damage?

reason me asking this question is i noticed not too long ago that the gases coming out of my exhaust are really hot..normally you can place you hand by the tip and be like, o cool its warm..well today, i checked again (2 weeks ago i did the same thing), i placed my hand by the tip and my hand was burning from the hot gases..the car has been idling for about 7-8 minutes and its pretty cold outside (right now its like 40 with a 30 wind chill)..

this worries me a bit..i know the low down on gases and its supposed to be hot cause it flows faster when hot and hot (normal) helps low/mid range torque with a proper muffled system but i believe in my situation, the gases are a bit too hot..

for example..pretend you want to make coffee, go boil water..wait for it to boil and the steam blowing out the tip..place your hand over the tip where the steam comes out..the gases of my exhaust are that hot, if not hotter..

another reason why i thought it was hotter cause i started my beater car (civic) for around the same time as the FD and it wasnt close to that temp of the FD, it was warm, you can actually leave your hand by the tip and be fine..you'll be lucky if you can leave your hand by the tip of my FD exhaust for more than 10 seconds..

FYI, car runs fine, no engine problems (knock on wood), turbos are fine, i have a dp, stock cat, 3 inch exhaust..

is this normal?

I don't think it's necessarily bad. The FD has some rather high EGT's (exhaust gas temp), and with no precat or stock cat-back to absorb some of the heat, more of it will come out of the exhaust tip.

I know my old TurboII typically had 500 deg. C exhaust temps just after the turbo AT IDLE. That's hot, my friend .

If the car runs properly, I think you're OK.

yeah i was sure the rx7 has some high egt's but i was uncertain for a moment..

but damn, 500 degrees?!?!! damn thats hot man!! lol

i dont know, i guess i got worried, i never noticed it before, even in the summer..o well..

Mine idles normally at around 4-500 degrees Celcius. I think its normal as rotary gases are hotter than normal piston engines. Comparing the exhaust gas from a Civic to an FD is like comparing apples and oranges. Usually hotter EGT gases mean that your car is running extra rich. This is a good thing since its cold up there, and might overboost if you punch it. As long as there is nothing wrong with how the car is acting, I wouldnt be worried. When I do some 3rd gear pulls on the highway, I usually hit around 6-800 degress Celcius.

Recently I noticed my downpipe glowing during idle, in cold weather. It was explained the car ran extra rich in these conditions during warmup, and the unburnt fuel would ignite in the upper exhaust and make things REAL hot. So in that sense I think it's normal. But I don't have a wideband or EGT sensor to confirm that.

I think that driving the car lightly would push by this warmup tuning much faster and keep temps down. Once the engine temperature sensors detect a warm engine, the afrs get much more lean and egts go closer to normal.
