i have been searching for a yr now( this is a common prob). i also have been asking fellow members in area this q. why is that the passenger side on my car sits higher than drivers ? im not talking the front im mainly concerned with the rear. why???i reajusted it, but no go....i have tein srings and tokico 5 way shocks. why isnt it even? i have a friend with an mx6 and another w an mx3 and they dont have this probkem then why the fd?? wasnt it built better than those cars. something has to give. what can fix this problem? what should i do....it really bothers me and i have to do something. some owners say that thier rx7 is even....everyone who reads this post can u leave feedback on ur experience and what u did to correct the problem.....thanks

 

I'm just firing this out here. If it's not suspension related, it could *possibly* be frame related. You can always check with your regional forum section for a good suspension and frame shop and have them take a look at it. Just an idea.

 

my third has a clean title as i know of or at least the dmv.. havent taken it to a frame shop yet, but yes it sits just a tad higher.. i always wondered why....??
maybe because these cars were mostly driven with only one person .... "the driver". keep me posted

 

This is honestly the first time I even heard of someone's car having an uneven drop when it's not directly suspension related. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that this is a common problem and if you still say it is then you should have a lot of solutions already layed out. I would say +1 for Red Suns comment regarding the frame. I would check to see if your cars been in any accident and from there inspect the frame yourself. As far as I know this isn't a common problem.

 

I've also never heard of this problem. I will tell you, I used to have VW Corrado and I was in a small accident in which I hit a curb pretty hard. I later found out that there was minor frame damage (I kept having wheel bearing issues because it was in a bind.)

The reason I'm telling you this is because an accident like that won't show up on a Carfax report, because there was no police incident. You'll need to put it on a frame machine to check for damage.

 

It's common for the driver's front to sag - the rubber mount at the top of the spring flattens out over time, since the extra weight on that side from the driver puts more wear on it. Probably the same situation with the rear shocks - your rubber mounts might be messed up.

Also, I've seen people incorrectly install springs - leave out spacers, put things in upside down, etc. That can all screw with the ride height.

Your ride height is almost entirely set by the spring/shock combo, so that's where to look. Unless there's something REALLY goofy, like one tire is larger than the other or something. Before you start messing with things, measure from the ground to the fender lip with a measuring tape, and write down what you find. This is a good idea anyhow when doing springs/shocks - it's an easy way to spot problems like this.

You could also have one shock in the rear that's bad - leaky shocks can sometimes sag down the assembly a bit. Taking the shock/spring assembly out, breaking it down, and thoroughly inspecting everything will give you the answer I feel.

The stock rubber strut tops all in good order? Any of them just plain worn out?

Its funny you mention that because my car is the same as yours. The drivers side sits slightly lower than the passenger side. Even my buddies fd with 30000miles on sits the same as mine and both cars are accident free. Both of us are running eibach springs with koni yellows. Its a mystery thats for sure.

When you measure the fender lip to ground distance be certain that the car sits on absolutely level ground and not in a sloping garage or driveway. Also, ideally you want to measure that distance when the driver sits in the car, or, when the car loaded with its usual passenger and fuel loads.

Having said that my driver side sits 1/8 - 3/16 lower as well. This is where an adjustable perch coilover assebly comes handy.

This has been discussed many times in the suspension section.

When stock, mine sat 10mm lower on the driver side front and rear. I installed new mounts and new GAB coilovers and Eibach springs and there is still a 10mm difference between the left and right. The only way to compensate is to get adjustable coilovers.

 

Wow, I didn't realize this was a problem. You guys have got me checking mine now. Here is a pic. See if you can see anything noticeable. Of course my driveway slopes a little to the left side of pic.

 

from my research there are alot of rx7 s that have this problem...my shock spring combo is new...i hate the fact that i luv the drivers side more. also my car has low milage accident free.....

After I installed my springs with new shock mounts in the front, I had matching ride height left to right.

To measure, get the car on a flat surface - in the garage, something you know is level. Open both doors, stick a foot in, and bounce the car on its suspension a bit to level it. I would also have the car just in gear and don't have the parking brake pulled up - the parking brake can preload the spring. Then, do your measurements.

I may go to the garage in a bit and re-measure my car .

Just measured. I've got about 20,000 miles on my Eibach springs (my car is a DD bigtime ). Rear is the same on both sides - 25 3/4". Front is different by 1/8" - 1/8" lower on the driver's side.

The rubber sping mounts will sag a bit over time - there's no way around that. Going with full coilovers with pillow ball mounts will eliminate the rubber altogether, but IMHO full coilovers are just too harsh for street/DD use. My Eibachs have been fantastic on the street with the stock shocks.

dont get me wrong i do believe if i change my mounts in the FRONT i will get matching heights in the FRONT.....BUT THI BELIEVE THIS WILL NOT WORK IN REAR

I don't have any problems with mine...i'm sitting on TEIN S-Tech springs and KYB GR-2 shocks.

Dude, it's likely your rear shock mounts sagging. You're gonna have to take the next step - remove the assembly and figure it out.

I posted my measurements to show that you shouldn't have problems - it's not "normal", in other words.

New shocks also don't mean they're still good - they can blow out. You're gonna have to do some work to get your answer.

WELL ....i did pull them off last week b ut i didnt see any diff......i really luv the look of the drivers side so i want the pass side the same....im guessing the only solution is coilovers.....but waht if i got some work mount and put them on the pass side...is this bad? or making the pass side mounts thinner? i just bought this setup and i dont want to put it to waste and i really dont have the funds for coilovers anyway. what do u think dale?
