Question Error in 1993 Service Highlights Manual?

Was just reading page F-47 of the 1993 RX-7 Service Highlights manual regarding the AWS system. The attachments are screenshots of that page (from the manual referenced in the thread below).

I cannot believe what I am reading here. The first attachment is just the AWS system page header; the second is of the text below the illustration on the same page.

The described operation of the AWS system is the exact opposite of what I would expect. Are the coolant temperatures reversed with respect to the description following? I am sure you want extra air (increasing idle rpm) when coolant is cold, and no extra air when coolant is hot.

That definitely seems reversed from what I've learned about AWS.

Yes, I think the words "above" and "below" were accidentally interchanged. But confirmation of that would be good. Otherwise I am removing and plugging the AWS tap points in the intake manifold.

Yep, I've seen that error myself. It's reversed.

AWS is an extremely useless and annoying system, but they HAD to put it on the US FD's to be able to sell them here, so that's really the only good thing about it.

Thanks, Dale and bowlcutsaresweet; I think maybe I'll just remove the solenoid valve and plug those holes anyway. It tends to try & squash vacuum lines, and I have a mysterious random idle speed increase problem, and the coil resistance is 13 ohms when it should be 9.3 - 11.3 ohms at 68°F. Also, rpm does not start up at 3K when cold... altogether the valve seems useless and maybe causing trouble. Will disconnecting the solenoid electrical connection cause MIL from Code #38? (Maybe put a 10 ohm or larger resistor across the harness terminals?)

That manual and others are linked from this forum thread. I checked the 1993 Service Highlights link and it is still working. The pdf will take a little while to load, but it is there.

actually i think maybe the temp value is wrong, there is a temperature where its too cold for the aws. 104 seems high though

To prevent an error code from being generated, put a resistor in lieu of the solenoid. I use 470 ohm, 5 watt, wirewound resistors because they are mechanically rugged, not to mention that I happened to have them on hand. The exact value isn't critical, values from 300 to 3000 ohms seem to work well, but the dissipation (wattage) should be overrated due to the high ambient temp and for best reliability.

If you really want to rid the UIM of the AWS, you can take out your sawzall and cut the mounting boss off, essentially flush with the manifold. What you're left with is one through hole which is already perfectly sized to receive a 3/8ths inch pipe tap. Thread the hole and put a pipe plug in and you're good to go. It cleans up a lot of space under the UIM and helps airflow.
