Engine Swap or No
Hey guys. Just seeing if I could get some of your opinions. Heres the situaion...
I was about to buy a perfectly running, VR r1 FD w/90k miles on it (for 13k).. but then a thought came to me..
Why not buy a blown one... have a hell of a time (fun time) takin the core out, etc.. gettin the new one customized, learning all about everything in the process may I add, and reinstalling it? Honestly, the learning factor is the biggest part in why I would want to do it. I have all the factory manuals, and a fairly nice tool array to begin with... but I will purchase any additional tools. I have a 2 car garage that I can store it in (without another car in it). I mean, that way I personally would know how the engine was cared for, and I could pick the engine that best suites me. Since I have a daily driver, there is no pressure to hurry up and fix this. And after only looking for 3 minutes I found a beautiful FD w/a blown Apex asking 7500..
What do you guys think?
Also, anyone who has first hand experience on doing an engine swap, I'd be very interested in talking to you...

www.autotrader.com here is your search criteria: RX7, 93-95, 10k maximum, any distance. You should get many hits
i just looked, found 3 FD's with blown motor going for 6k 7k mint exterior with blown motor. If your a grease monkey, and have time to learn and be very precise, id say its worth it. If this will be your only car for a while, dont even bother

I was looking into buying a blown motor FD. I understand the engine is usually the first to go but do the other parts of the car i.e. transmission and differential show similar wear characteristics or are most of the parts on an FD bulletproof except the motor.
Basically I want to know if I get an FD with a bad motor, the motor is going to be the only thing that needs to be replaced.
