Engine Stand Recommendations?
thewird
The Pineapple adapter is reasonably priced and makes a HUGE difference when working on the engine. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Big thing is it does give you plenty of room to access everything on the block, and it also puts the pivot point at the center of mass on the engine so it can spin around on the engine stand much easier.

While you can make your own if you have a stock of scrap metal and/or a welder, I do recommend the Pineapple stand for a few reasons.
First, you're going to be putting a heavy, expensive engine on it, and probably assembling the long block (turbos, manifolds, etc.) on it. Would you like that to fall on the floor? Me neither.
Also, you're going to be torquing things on the stand - flywheel nuts, front pulley nuts, and removing them as well. It's got to be able to stand up to that.
The Pineapple adapter is one piece of VERY thick powdercoated steel that's bent for clearance. Since it's one piece, there's no welds to fail. It's also been thought through so the center of the engine's mass is at the pivot point.
I built many motors with some sawhorses and a piece of plywood for an engine stand, and after using the Pineapple adapter and a HF stand it's night and day. It's the right tool for the job.
And, if you aren't going to be doing much engine work, you can probably turn right around and sell it when you're done for nearly all the cost you have in it.

+1 This^^
This is the setup I am using in my build thread. It is awesome to be able to turn the engine whichever way I need, to be able to gain comfortable access along with good lighting to whichever portion I am working on. Can't go wrong with this setup.
Here is how it looks with the adapter. Nice and centered. Safe weight distribution. Easy to rotate.
