engine rebuild
i'm looking for some guidance here. first hand experiece is a big plus, but any advice is welcome.
i've got a '93 base model with a blown engine (no compression in the rear rotor housing). i would like to tear down and rebuild the engine with a few friends and my big shop manual. i've been told that if i get the engine broken down and there is no scaring or warpage, i should be able to replace all the seals and put it back together "good as new". i was also told if the side walls, intermediate wall or rotor housings were damaged, i should start looking for a new engine (more on that in a bit).
i'm looking for someone who has done this, some web sites with rebuild kits, prices, things to look out for, prices, web sites and prices.
now for engine replacement (if nessisary).
what are the pros and cons of: factory spec rebuild vs. street ported, 3mm apex seal (blah, blah, blah) rebuilds?
maybe i just need to get a pettit bonzi (just kidding).

Rebuild kits are around $1300:

Unless you are just dying to rebuild the motor yourself, it's almost worth it to spend the extra few hundred and get a reman for $2000.

No it's not Turbo'd
Reman = Stock ports, and Stock Seals or at lest the ones from Mazda
Rebuild = Custum Job, you pick the parts and then build the engine...
If you have scarred housings, like I did, you can buy just one houseing provided the other is good, (my situation) and if one is bad and the other is scarred, you'll need both, rarely are the side houseings damaged... since as I remember the sides are steel and the houseings are aluminimum....
I would (am) doing a rebuild, since if you want a reman, and a port job you have to pay to tear it down and rebuilkd anyhow, since once you bust the seals, you need new seals... due to the way they seat...

i rebuilt mine about a year ago. do a search on the name, and you'll find my write up.
also, follow paw140's advice, and get the video.
i rebuilt mine, 98% off the video - used the shop manual for random ref. - plus, bruce is coming out with a new version of the vid for the FD, which should include how to port, and some other stuff -
good luck.
