Engine# location?

Engine# location?
Where is the engine number located? I am doing a hose job and wanted to see if the original engine is still in the car. The manual shows a vague picture of the location but I don't see it.

There should be a serial number one the water pump housing and/or one of the rear housing.

However, this number will NOT match the VIN of the car.

It should match the chassis number on the firewall though right?
