Engine fire tear down-- who's done it, what to expect?

I recently picked up an REW short block w/ turbos & WP housing, & 5 spd trans for a STEAL of $100. Motor is a 3/99 reman, & was pulled from car in...2005 or there abouts. There was an engine fire, the upper hoses/injectors were severely melted, but all else isn't that bad looking. I've seen fires where ALL was lost, but once I got down to the core, it isn't all that bad looking.

Vague, but quick picture:

My question is, who here's torn down a block that was in a fire? How bad does it have to be for stuff to be un-useable (housings/irons)? I know I won't know til it's torn down & inspected, but hey worth a feeler thread

Thanks!! Now I just need an FD. haha

I've torn down 3-4. I wouldn't be worried about the fire as much as I would be it sitting in FL untouched for 9 years. Irons and rotors are likely rusted from humidity. housings were likely unaffected. For $100 you can't go wrong anyway.

Wicked, that's more what I wanted to hear . We'll have to dig into it sooner than later & see how pitted everything is. It was locked a bit ago, but I soaked it in seafoam & got it to unlock and turn over. Stuck seals, but it's atleast moving. Hopefully the seafoam can go to work until I tear it down

Don't continue to turn it over. You're better off trying to open it as is while frozen. Many times rotor housings are salvageable to be resurfaced but sometimes the irons themselves are eroded/rusted way too much. 9 years is a LONG time.

Post pictures if you can...
