Engine died, no clue why. (I wasn't there)

Well, just like the title says: the engine died today, and I have no clue why, as I am a state away from the car. (I'm going to college at LSU, but the 7 stays home with my parents - too afraid of it getting stolen or vandalized over here). I task my father with driving it 3 times a week, and today, he chose to drive it to his martial arts class (35 min drive). He didn't make it that far... I asked him to email me the exact details of what happened in his words...

"I started the RX this morning around 9:15. Backed out the Mercedes and the van. The car might have been idling for two or three minutes while I got my gear together. Backed out and drove down access road to 99 to I-10 about 1.5 miles. Drove down I-10 access road to get on I-10 near Mason. Drove from Mason to approximately 1/4 mile past Fry Road when the engine did not respond. The car began to lose speed and noticed that the engine was not running. Shifted to neutral and signaled to get in right lane and pulled to shoulder right over Greenhouse Rd - a total distance of 6.3 miles from the house.

Tried to restart the engine a number of times. Tried pumping the gas pedal to see if I could smell gas (no - could not). Waited about 10 minutes and tried to restart. Engine started but immediately died.

Towed the car back to the house."

He thinks it may be a clogged fuel filter. Any other ideas?

Car is a White '95 PEP, with ~73500 miles on the chassis, 12k miles on a Mazda Reman, SS DP, Mazdaspeed radiator (supposedly), SS AST, ACT clutch, aftermarket FPD, K&N intakes, rat's nest redone by previous owner.

Sounds like a fuel or a spark issue.

This happened to me before and it was a simple fuse.

Could also be a fuel pump failure if you said he didnt smell any fuel from trying to restart the car several times.

Could be the fuel pump relay which IIRC switches from 9v to 12v to the pump.
