engine builders opinion reusing parts
Got block torn down and cleaned ...Wanted to know if housings and bearings are reusable
-Cross white lines are from garage lighting, tablet camera picked them up
-Didnt know how much copper showing is ok for bearings
-these are front housings, no grooves real smooth, wasnt sure about the wear the shiny reflective spots, how much is acceptable
Thanks
Brad

bearings are toast
housings are usable but could be better, even resurfacing them won't give optimal results since it looks like they are down to and past the chrome. if the chrome missing was only in the bottom area of the housing i would say go for it, being that the gouging is in the top of the housing the compression is going to suffer. best case with those housings would be in the 90-100psi range, resurfaced maybe 100-110, new 120-130.
lower compression means less low speed throttle response.

So bearings are trashed
Housings for a street car (weekend warrior) and track car every once in awhile should be replaced
Almost wished I would of bought a reman from ray
Heres two more pics
-first is front housing
-second is the rear
Hard to take pics, housings are all silver in color with shiny polished chrome spots, thats what I wasnt sure about, thats what is considered flaking ?
Any other color is just reflection
Thanks

Ok makes more sense now ...and resurfacing doesnt take enough off to fix this?
Resurfacing is nothing like turning brake rotors then ? Correct?
Never seen refurfacing done

if the gouging is bad enough then resurfacing will help marginally, you can't take the chrome layer all the way down if the gouging is all the way through the chrome. in other words there will always be a step. i can't tell how bad it is through the pictures so i can't truly say how good it would turn out.

Got around to checking housings with micrometer ... Flaking is worse on front housing..technically within specs... 2mm is the most in areas
Still think new housings is the way to go

Was just to get motor rebuilt and running without smoking, since I have it out now im gonna
Single turbo build , street car some drag and maybe track , around 400-450hp
Been talking with sean over at a-spec about kits and porting (been very helpful)
Get the car back to almost new condition ( repair ...replace all old worn 20year old stuff)
I havnt cut any corners yet with the car...im leaning towards new housings
Sean , you and the others make good points
Basically if im gonna do it do it right the first time
Just trying to find best price (before my boy was born, wouldnt matter I'd just buy )

I looked at the pics from my computer, and though your pic quality isn't the greatest those housings don't look terrible. You are going to see outer edge wear on any housing with 20k miles or more. I'd be more concerned with the rest of the mating surface. Any chatter? Can you catch a finger nail or feel a height difference in the area of the trailing plug hole? It's hard to say without better pics but they looked a lot better on my computer screen than from my phone.

Ideally you want no chrome flaking. Resurfacing only removes a few mil of material. So far there is no perfected process to re-chrome the housings. Goopy performance currently resurfaces the housings and is working on a re-chrome process, but last I heard it is not finalized. As long as the housings aren't warped, I would resurface those and use them for a budget build. Would I use them for 500hp? No. The bearings are trashed and from the wear pattern on them it looks like you may have have the belts cranked too tight.

Ill have to try take pics with my phone, its almost one of those you got to see in person things
Just ran finger nail acrossed it, nothing to noticeable, looks worse then it feels
Measured the flaking around outside like I said 2mm around exhaust port.. thickness of flaking I just checked now with feeler gauge was .076mm

if the housings weren't that bad then the resurfacing could totally revive them to like new. the gouging being what it is will not bring the surface back to true, but compression would be better than reusing them as-is.
i haven't yet noticed any downsides to resurfacing them in several years but time will tell. the difference being $300 versus $1700.
