engine build-up questions...

Hi everybody,

I was wondering how do you guys think in terms of building up a Rotary. Say for a HP goal of 400 HP what all are you looking at for building up the engine. BTW It would be a daily driver.

Also is there any way a lightly modded FD will pass CA smog? say with just a Intake, DP, Exhaust, and the right fuel setup.

what about a modest single turbo setup? I doubt a single would even pass the visual unless it was an CARB E.O. number, but I haven't found any "single " kits with E.O. numbers.

and last question what 1/4 mile times am I looking at with BPU's like:

-Intake
-DP
-3" exhaust
-IC
-standalone

will I need larger injectors?

You will likely fail the CA smog check. Not the emission portion, but the visual (unless you find a "flexible" shop that performs emissions checks). Both cat converters are required. My emissions with PFC, DP, Intake, high flow cat, & CB were extremely low. I changed out my plugs before hand, and I made a couple of WOT runs before going to the station.

I don't think that there are any single turbos for FDs with CARB numbers. You might be able to fake that portion. Hopefully, some of the guys from CA will respond.

400 HP at the engine could be done with the stock twins, 400 RWHP will be very difficult with the stock twins...it is better to go to a small single for this.

It will depend on what boost you are running with the mods listed below. 1/4s could be anywhere in the 12s, and larger injectors may be needed.

if you plan on running higher boost, you'll definately need bigger injectors. the stock injectors are maxin out around 14.x~psi. trust me i just replaced my motor after seeing boost spiking/creep with insufficient boost control......

thanks for the replys guys,

If (and when) I do get an FD, I'd be very interested in getting a modest single turbo setup. I looked in the RX7store and was interested in the XS' TO4E kit and also the Apexi kit. Also whats the differences between the HKS T04E and the XS T04E? is the HKS better quality?

I just want a decent setup that will give me at least 400ish WHP, on the stock rear-end.

With that much HP would I need to build the internals any? or do I just make sure my tuning and fuel control is perfect? I'm used to thinking in terms of sleeving the cylinders and replcing pistons and rods, but when it comes to rotaries I know very little about what to build-up.

And one last question, how hard do you guys think it would be to swap out the single setup back to the stock sequential setup? I might do this when smog time comes around (CA).

TIA
