I read on a Shifters thread...

That someguys are using a Engine Brace to stop the Engine from moving around so much... causing the tranny to move around , then you get missed or sloppy shifts.

What are the drawbacks to this? I suspect more engine noise and what else?

Also where can you get one? What's all involved? Costs ect.?

I could really use this... It would help at the 1/4 mile strip. Really getting sick of granny shifting 3rd gear.

 

a guy i know used a simple plate made from a machine shop to remedy this problem. it blocks of 5th gear. it is realy neat. no more missing it(3rd). it goes around the shifter. i dont think this is what you were looking for, but maybe a lightbulb will go offf in your hear about something.

 

I've got some badass parts that me and my friend designed and made.....one of them being the torque brace. I used a heim joint on one end and just bolted the other side of the 1" chrome-moly tube to the intake manifold where the lift bracket was. You have to make another bracket to mount to the unibody right above the ABS. It's not for the timid as it transmits all torque and motor fibrations through the car. I've also built some subframe connectors (with a cross brace) and modified the PPF along with the rear suspension. The rear suspension is chrome-moly tubing w/heim joints....i'm also looking into making my own coil-over kit for drag racing.

 

I have only one bracket left to fab before mine is complete. I am going to mount the bracket to soem rubber on the fender wall as to reduce vibrations. You can also use a shock dampener instead of solid aluminium for brace which helps as well.

THe torque brace is a great idea in my opinion. It is just solid 1/2" aluminum rod with 2 rod ends attached to UIM adn fender wall to prevent engien from moving. I COntact crispeed (sp) he has a how to out somewhere. A lot of Japanese tuners use it, but if you order it costs like 300$. I am making mine for about 50$.

 

KZ1: have you found a place that has the shock dampener like the Jap. version? I haven't been able to find one....although I haven't been looking terribly hard. I'm going to play with different mounting methods to find one that is decent on the street but strong enough for track....then make one for all out track.

 

no I haven't, I didn't even bohter looking. I read somewhere that somebody used a motorcylce shock, but I am not sure. Sorry I couldn't help more. The TIIs come with them, so it can't be that bad.

 

Without giving away too much info it the steering damper off a motorcycle...and it's EXPENSIVE.
There is a move afoot to market for you guys the version using the solid aluminum rod. Details to be provided soon. Interested parties PM me to get your name at the top of the list.
