Emissions testing...

I've looked through some old threads and didn't find anything relating to the stock ECU. I have always passed emissions with flying colors...yes with an RX7! I just failed my test, which was the first test with my apexi (base mod map) untuned...failed the cruise test, idle was fine. I was thinking of throwing in my old ECU and trying again, you guys think that will do the trick?

If you observed the test, you might know on which part of the map is being used.
Lean out that area. Years ago, I logged my first test with the DATALOGIT which gave me exact info on where to adjust the fuel. Then I leaned out those areas.

Running 10-15% ethanol with gas also helps as it leans out and burns cleaner.

I have to get tested next month, that's a great idea. I'll leave the laptop/datalogit running while they test it.

They did the test in second gear between 24-26Mph. I only have a commander, so I guess I"ll run the car in 2nd gear at that speed and see what part of the map it's using.

Do you guys pass without a pre-cat? ( we dont have these test in OK) I would expect them too since pre-cats are genreally used only for quick lightoff. But I'm new to the RX7 so I am not sure.

You don't have to lean out anything or run any funky gas or chemicals.

The PFC cuts off the air pump at 2500 rpm instead of 3200 rpm like the stock ecu. The 25 mph test in 2nd gear cuts the air pump off, and you fail. Run the 25 mph test in 3rd gear and you will pass just fine.

How the tests are performed are not under driver control (at least here in Massachusetts). You have to hand over your car to some loser who doesn't have enough skills to be working in the shop. Often, I hear the kid bouncing in and out of boost because they don't understand what's going on.

Can the air pump behavior be modified with a datalogit?

The DL does not have any control for the air pump. Yu cold direct wire it for the test.

The dyno program that TX uses for the 15 and 25MPH tests, loads the engine to cells which the engine never uses in real life driving.

At 15mph in 2nd gear, it was at (P7, N4).
At 25mph in 3rd gear, it was at (P6, N5).

My engine has not been stock since 1995, and since 2005 it has been single turbo.

Thanks for the help guys. I didn't mention that I'm running 9 plugs in the leading, I think I'll swap out to stock 7s. At the testing, they have you run in second gear to 25Mph, no option to go to third. Maybe yank some fuel out of the cells just for good measure. Wish me luck.

Just an update, I passed emissions with flying colors! I just swapped out my leading plugs to the hotter 7s and changed oil...barely registered anything on their computers this time around.
