I recently removed the EGR valve on the FD to inspect it. I ordered a new gasket from the local Mazda dealer, but it is considerably different than the gasket that was on the EGR valve that I pulled off. The new one just has a very tiny hole on the one side, where the one on the EGR valve that I pulled had a much larger hole. Is there an explanation for this?
Mazda made the hole smaller to try to keep the valves from failing every other week. they made the change in like 97 or so, its not recent. and don't worry the EGR doesn't have a measurable effect on emissions anyways
thank CARB for forcing them to put EGR on the engine, this was their mockery of the requirement by finding a loophole of making it virtually inoperable through the restriction. basically mazda's middle finger to them for wasting their time.
of course if you find a really enthusiastic smog tech that actually finds the EGR and feels adventurous enough to test it, it will fail the stall test, then you have to point them to the book and proper test procedure.
