EGR Again

I just changed it out two years ago and now it is signaling again.

While I am in there, is there anything else that should be checked/improved? I already did a hose job (vacuum and water).

I will probably test the valve and replace it again. However, last time I discovered that the pinhole on the gasket was plugged, maybe this is the case again.

There really isn't much else in the area to check since you're only removing the air box, air pump and y-pipe. As far as fixing the egr goes I wouldn't bother. Just replace it with a 12v relay to fool the ecu into thinking it's working. You will still pass emissions testing no problem and it won't bother you again.

I may indeed disable it. The only reason I want to replace/ or clean it are that:

1) it helps cool the chambers (and I would think all the cooling it can get is good)
2) I think the car is already running too rich and a little more is not desired.

I know the effects in both these areas are minor, but I still like to have it run as much as possible as designed.

I will just have to see how I feel when I get in there.

Although the egr's function is to keep combustion temps below the point that NOx forms any "cooling" lost by disabling it will be very minor. Besides the egr passages normally get clogged, or the pinhole in the gasket gets clogged, or the heat causes intermittent failure of the on/off switch sensor. So unless you know how to deal with all these commonly occuring problems just replace it with a 12v relay.

2) I think the car is already running too rich and a little more is not desired.
It won't run richer. Exhaust gas is inert and doesn't consume, or add fuel during combustion. Besides the egr only functions at cruising speeds in 5th gear IIRC.

I know the effects in both these areas are minor, but I still like to have it run as much as possible as designed.
Very minor, if any, ill effects are experienced by disabling the EGR. But the benefit of not having to deal with a component proned to failure greatly outweighs it either way.

Last time I bought it (about a year ago) it was $5.04 from Malloy IIRC.

Well, no one has said this is a bad idea... and I am gettting tired of this - even if it is only every two years. So, I guess it's time for the EGR to go.
