ECU code 09 - thermostat?? WTF?

Hey guys, i am almost completed sorting out all of my problems with this car.. got my boost back, toubleshooted a few bad sensors, and got the thing running for more then 1 mile, thanks to your help. The thing now is, after that 1 or 2 miles of driving under load, the car will throw a code and die a few seconds later. Checking the code i have a code 09---- Thermostat... i have replaced it 800 miles ago, with no problems until now. My question is can the car be too hot causing the ECU to think the t-stat is not functioning? Or could the sensor be bad alltogether? Ways to check it?

Well, first off, check code 9 again. According to my sources, that is the water thermosensor not the thermostat. I had the same code thrown a while back. It's a little sensor on the back of the water pump housing. It's kind of a pain to replace but it's doable. Also you might want to look into replacing the stock thermosensor with a miata one as I think it changes the signal to the ECU so that the radiator fans kick on at a lower temp.

Remove the themosensor and check it per the manual. If you have an aftermarket water temp gauge, and it reads normal, then there is your answer.

After rereading your post, I am not sure what you were exactly refering to, so if you already knew it was the sensor, then do not take offense.
