Eccentric shaft pulley bolt

So this is FD land, eh? I'm an FB'er myself, buy my friend has a 1993 FD and he's got it in his head that he's going to disassemble the motor and "beef it up".. I think he's been watching a little too much Fast and Furious myself, but he's already pulled the motor.

He asked me a question I can't answer so I'm bringing it to you... it seems he's having trouble removing the bolt which holds the pulley on the eccentric shaft neck. The question is:

Is it a reverse thread or just a normal thread stuck on there REALLY tight?

Please let me know before he does something stupid to a really nice car. Thanks!

You need to tell your friend that he needs to spend about 3 weeks solid on this forum learning about his car before he does anything.

There are no internal engine parts to "build up" to increase horsepower. Even single turbo guys running 400 rwhp have stock internals unless they've done a rebuild. No offense, but your friend is ignorant and needs to learn a LOT about modifying rotaries.

You need to tell your friend that he should be EXTREMELY careful pulling that pulley off.

I can't find the link now, but there's a writeup on how some dude toasted some internal bearings and junk that was supported by that bolt and whatever was inside on the other end of it. Lot of roller bearings lost off the races, floating around the engine internals.

Maybe someone else has that link? I think it was on my home computer, which is sitting toasted right now til i get a new HD to transfer salvaged stuff off onto.

Unhappy

I've done all I can to discourage him in this venture. If anyone can find the link mentioned above, please share it so I can give it to him. He doesn't have his own internet access, so I need something I can print and give to him at work.

He seems to think he needs some type of aftermarket seals inside so he can run a NOS system... like I said, too much Fast & Furious.

I think about a year from now someone's going to get a great deal on a '93 RX in need of a motor.

Thanks for the great link and other advice. Hopefully with this info I can scare him away from doing something stupid. It would be a shame to see another rotary die on the operating table... even if it is an FD

You got to be pulling my leg. Your friend can't spend 10 bucks a month for internet access, but is willing to risk a $3000 rebuild job. I purchased this video a while back that shows a rebuild on a FC 13B. It's not a 13Brew but it's still a excellent tool for learning about 13B's. Best of luck to your friend... sound like "taps" for another FD to me.

Sorry to say, this is no joke.. you'd have to know the guy. He's always got big plans, but no grasp on reality or practicality. Would you believe the car isn't even close to being paid for? He hasn't even owned it for 6 months.

Had a runability problem when he bought it... it would fall on its face in the mid RPM range if you put your foot into it, but would come out of it as you accelerated through. Wouldn't happend if you drove at an easy pace. I think that's what started him going on this whole teardown thing.. I told him it was unlikely to be a mechanical problem w/ the engine internals.

Took it to a Mazda dealer and they said they could see what it was doing but had no clue as to why. Their only action plan was to go through it one system at a time and troubleshoot ($$$). Their compression test showed the front rotor to be 20lb less than the rear (that's what he told me anyway).

Any thoughts on what the original problem was?

Sounds like either the infamous 3k hesitation or fuel cut.. definitely something electrical and not mechanical. And of COURSE the Mazda dealer told him there was a major mechanical problem with it. Sounds like he may have jumped the gun a bit here..
