dropping my transmission, what else should i do while its out
i'm think im going to start a huge project pretty soon. I have to drop the transmission to fix my 5th gear syncro. while i have it out is there anything people can think that i should do while im at it because the car will be jacked up for quite a while here's my list so far
1. transmission
2. fuel filter
3. weld rattling exhaust heat shield
4. find which pillow bushing is bad
5. downpipe
6. stock airbox mod
7. home depot boost controller
i don't have alot of money so don't just suggest modding it out
thanx in advance for your input

Miles on the car?
Typically with the tranny out you want to replace the clutch and inspect the flywheel. The rear engine seals behind the flywheel are a known issue, so go ahead and pull the flywheel. Once that's off replacing the rear seal is not hard.
Installing the downpipe will be a cinch with no tranny in there

Now's a good time to replace that sucky overdrive 5th gear with a lower 5th ratio such as 0.806:1
That ratio will result in about 4000 rpm @ 90 mph in 5th if you have stock tire size and ring and pinion ratio.

Rear stationary gear's o-ping, and also of course the rear main seal. Don't forget the transmission's input and output shaft seals. If you are doing only the 5th gear synchro, its a peice of cake. Let me know if you hunt for part numbers, I did this just recently.

1. Get some heat shielding material and cover up the top of that tranny tunnel so all that freaking heat doesn't wind up in the cabin.
2. Replace fluids iwth Redline MTL and Gear oil.
3. If you have $150 or so burning a hole in your pocket, get that tranny brace that the dude from Japan makes. It seems like it would be the most effective brace.

good call Ryker. i would replace the forks anyway. they are like a lousy $75. i have had them break. not fun trying to find someone with a spare bellhousing when the forks let out and shatter your housing. i welded mine backtogether, someone else may not be as lucky as i got.

Get a $$ loan and install an ACT clutch/9.5# flywheel. If you can't afford that at least replace the pilot bearing and seal.
While you have the gear shifter out replace the teflon bushing on the end of the shifter.
...and make sure the ground wire is connected to your exhaust system.
