driving 300 miles, how to avoid rock chips?

I live in Los Angeles and just made a deal to purchase a 94 in Vegas. I'm going to be driving back to LA, does anyone have suggestions on what I can do to avoid flying rocks or gravel from damaging the paint? Where can I buy those white tape that I see on new vehicles being trasported? Any other types of tape or paint products that I can use? Will saran wrap work?

Thank you.

Has anyone ever put saran wrap on their nose to protect it?

Saran wrap. Are you kidding? what do you do grab the roll and run around the car a bunch of times. What if it starts to unwrap and you end up pulling a three hundred foot streamer.
But seriously it would be nice to use those white sheets.

some auto detailing places provide a service call ed the clear bra or somhting to that effect. It's like an adhesive bra that you can't really see unless you feel the car.

Just drive (relatively) slow (yeah, that's gonna be a challenge!), don't follow other vehicles too closely and stay away from big trucks (especially big GRAVEL trucks, obviously hehe). Rocks don't just jump up and smack your car, just because.

The 'clear' bra typically runs about a couple hundred dollars for the bumper, not sure if any companies make em for the FD.

Unless you are truly unlucky, it takes awhiles before you accumulate any significant chips (if you follow the above advice).

Congrats on the purchase.

Saran Wrap would likely come loose in places and would damage the paint as it flapped around in the wind.

You could buy a bra beforehand, but they screw up the paint, too.

I've had great luck with ordinary bras, the vinyl is thick enough to keep chips at bay, but the chafing can be an issue. Even a little everyday road grit on the edges can act like fine sandpaper and really dull or cut completely through the paint.

It order to avoid the chafing I strategically place a few small strips of 3M adhesive backed thick clear vinyl on the paint BEFORE permanently installing the bra. This way the bra chafes the vinyl and not the paint. You can buy the vinyl through any motorcycle dealer, it comes in a pack with 3 generous sized sheets - about 10 X 14, and I think I paid about $15.00 for it. You may need to special order it. Enough for 6 cars.
It's also great for protecting the paint at the bottom rear of the wheel arches from gravel.

For the nose I placed it along the edges where the bra fits over the fender. It's practically invisible. If you need to take it off in the future it peels right off with a little heat from a hair dryer.

I used to take the bra off every time I washed my car, and it was a pain in the butt. Now I take it off once or twice a year. Oh yeah, make sure the bra fits really tight.

Let's see, I've had a bra on my Dark Grey 1987 BMW 528i for 15 years, my White 1992 Ford Van for 11 years, and my Vintage Red 1993 FD3S since April of 1993. Continually. So that's a combined 36 years on different vehicles from different manufactures, different colors, different paint formulations.

The fronts of all the cars look like they are brand new, and have no rock chips or bug strikes.

I live in Tucson. And it rains a lot here in July and August.

I think what you are saying falls into the Urban Myths category. You probably also believe that cell phones cause gas station fires.....

This is what I'am talking about. I've read about this and I believe they put it on the new Lexus's but I don't know. You put it on your head lights also so they don't chip. Works great.
