Downtime (how long)on engine swap?

A simple question. Give the experience of some of the forum members, How long start to finish does it take to swap an engine in the FD?
I'm not so much worried about the actual labor, I mean getting the engine out from the car shipping the block to someone to get repaired. How long did you have to wait on others.

The reason that I ask is I have decided to buy an FD and before my lease is up with my truck I want to replace the engine and turbos ( along with the vaccum lines etc.) So that I can make this car into a reliable every day driver. I want to purchase the car ahead of time so that I can have the truck to drive around in and not be rushed to fix the FD. Therefore I need to schedule when to purchase the FD to start repairs on it

If you go through Malloy Mazda in Virginal there is absolutely no wait time. They will ship you a reman'd and once you get the old engine out just ship it back to them in the same box the reman came in. The one I got from them had a flywheel, oil pump and thermostat already on it. ($1950, shipping $200 because I had it shipped to a weird area... usually shipping is about $100.00)

The wait time comes in when you end up finding out that pieces are not in the condition they should be outside of the engine (driver side motor mount, broke a couple nipples on some solenoids, and once we got started... decided to upgrade the pulleys and intake). Waiting on these parts that I wasn't expecting to buy took the most time. If you have all the parts ahead of time it's just the labor that you'll wait on and going through Malloy saves loads of time if you go the reman route. Why are you thinking of doing a rebuild... these reman's are pretty cheap and have a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty.

Thanks for the info, that is definitely a quick turn around time (Malloy). The point about the couple nipples on some solenoids being broken is definitely a concern of mine. I think ( I could be wrong about this) If you get an FD that has over 70K miles on it... even if cared for (although finding one of those cheap is next to impossible) your going to have to replace the turbos and engine with in 20 to 40 K miles. Not because the turbos or engine are designed bad, but good lord the heat in that engine compartment is so intense! Like I said in my first post, I want to make this thing a daily driver so repairing the vaccuum lines, turbo's , and engine are very important to me. I think that best thing that I could do is find a RX-7 with a blown motor cheap.

Basically what I'm thinking is that I need to get an FD 3 -4 months before I actually need it.

About right ?
