is a downpipe incredibly recommended in terms of engine longetivity? or are there any alternatives?

i know they're illegal, but apparently they're one of the best reliability mods.

i don't feel like risking an exhaust ticket, but i don't want my precat to explode either =/

Yes, get a DP. A search will give you lots of info. You can pass smog with a DP in Ca.
