Downpipe & High Flow Cat Installed *love*
Man I can't believe how much of a difference just those to parts make. I now have a full 3" DP and MP with a high flow cat. Holy crap is the car loud and man shakes the earth. Apex'i GT Spec exhaust has got to be the best sounding exhaust.
Anyways after driving her with these mods I am now in heaven. Throttle response is amazing and the BOV and turbo spool are way louder. After performing these modifications I have to recommend this as a must. I know most of you guys have been on this set up for a long while but you never really know how much the stock parts restrict the car til you actually open up the air flow. Just makes me think how much more powerful Mazda coulda made this car in it's stock form if they woulda modified a few parts before putting it in mass production.
I wonder though did any of you other guys have issues with the exhaust popping after this like the car is running really rich? Could be my new turbos still having to burn crap out.

manny34711: Yeah I still have all the stock goodies.
HardHitter: I'm currently running a stock ECU. I know I know I will probably get flamed "you're gonna blow your engine man!". As other members have said though the high flow cat still restricts enough air to protect you from overboosting really bad. So far the boost has been at a normal 11/9/11 for an open exhaust. After I get my alarm installed I'm gonna be putting in an ECU. Until then I will layoff the throttle just a little bit.

Yeah I was just wondering in doing the same I was going to get wheels, but for the cost wheels are, I could get a PFC/midpipe/springs. I already have HKS downpipe and Racing Beat Exhaust. How much louder is the exhaust when you added them? I know I added HF Cat and Greddy exhaust on my RX8 and that thing was stupidly loud.

fallen, do you still have your airpump? What about your emission levels? Are they still legal? It's because i'm thinking about the same mods but we have strict emission controls here in euroland...

How do you have a midpipe with a high flow cat? Is it a: high flow cat, a straight MP, or a resonated MP?
you won't get any flames from me about runing a stock ecu (see sig). I WOT my car all of the time. But honestly if I were you I would lower the boost by 1 psi.

MakoRacing is on the ball. They took my aftermarket midpipe and welded a high flow cat on to it. I suppose I coulda just got one that already had this done but *shrug*. That 11 PSI was actually from when I first changed the exhaust for the GT Spec and that gave me a 1 PSI bump which is what most have said happens. As far as being smog legal...I wont know til May but I went with a high flow cat that is a little bit more restrictive hoping that will work out for our rotary powered rockets.
As far as exhaust sound levels. It was fairly loud at first but it seems to have broken in and now just has a deep rumble to it but under WOT it does get quite loud. recon FD just wait til you hear that BOV and your turbos spool up after changing out the DP and MP. Music to my ears.

FLOW.
The stock ECUs maps are setup for given levels of pressure with a fixed flow (what stock is). As said many times in the past, 10 psi through a straw is not the same as 10 psi through an oil pipeline.
I guarantee you, you're going to blow the engine if you continue to use the stock ECU, hands down. Without a wideband to verify, I wouldn't even be driving the car.
