Just got my drivers door open at last. The lock mechanism was jammed, and wasnt unlocking properly. Luckily I had a second lock mechanism lying around and was able ot figure out which bit I needed to hook with my coathanger. Took no time at all, I hooked it in 10 seconds. Got some pics ready to go........but....

Should I post pics/info for people or would that be promoting stealing? You gotta remove the exterior door handle to do it but I don't want to contribute to a stolen FD if some retard figures out how to do it thru the weather strip at the bottom of the window.

 

I'd say keep the photos off the forum, and people can PM you if they need to know how to do this. If the user has been around for a while, send them the info. If not, screw 'em.

Guess you can post them now since you pretty much described it already. And I'm sure that there are plenty of other ways to break one open in addition to this, so it's nothign new to anyone who would actually try to lift one.

 

Nothin beats the 'ol smash 'n grab. If someone has the aptitude and gall to steal a car, they're gonna do it with or without this info. And if someone who HAS an RX-7 wants to steal an RX-7, $10 says they've already got a pretty good idea how to get it open.

 

Our cars are pretty easy to break into, and if they really want it the door lock isn't going to stop them.

 

yea can get in in about 30 secs with no key..........

I say dont post pics. Most of the fd guys already know how to get into the car without a key and those are the only ones who need to know. Keep in mind the amount of people who scan this forum and dont own these cars. I say DONT DO IT.

Yeah fair enough - if it's that easy to get into then I won't post pics. If someone is in the situation I was in and they can't get the doors open, they can always PM someone to ask.

My searches for info when I was trying to get the door open turned up a few people who had a similar problem - I wanted to put the info out there for guys like those in the future. But as long as they search, post a thread or PM someone I'm sure they'll figure it out.

 

You know what, my lock felt like it was going to jam today. I think I'll put some oil in it. If you ever get a pm form me I'll be asking you how to get into the car

 

Yeah I don't know what caused mine to Jam up. After I took it out and inspected it, there was a bit of metal that had rotated to a position where it shouldn't be. No idea how it got to be in that position. The bottom line was, there was no way the door was going to open by manipulating the rods or cables in any way.

 

It's one thing when it jams, it's another when stupidity gets you. When I had my motor with bad o-rings I got out to add water and some how managed to push the interior lock down while exiting the car. This isn't necessarily a problem as you usually have to hold the handle up or it won't lock. Mine closed but not all the way, so I figue just push the door to fully close it and it won't lock......not today that thing locked bigger than Sh@t and now here I am in Florida , July, back road, car locked, cell phone on the front seat, car was heading into the hot side of the gauge and I've just closed the hood before I realized the door was locked. After realizing there's not much to do I just had to sit and wait till someone came by. They did I had them tell my friend where I was, he called a lock smith (did I forget to mention it's Saturday ! ! ! ) We manage to get hold of a lock smith, shows up about an hour later. Has all these bent rods and a book to open doors on different cars. Well he tries for about 30 min. and is ready to give up. I ask if I can try (I've just been into my drivers door adding a right hand drive power door lock) so I have an idea where to put the rod, took me two minutes (got the rod hung up a couple times getting it into the right place) but got it open. Can't believe it the cars been idling now for almost two hours with bad o-rings in 95 degree / 100% humidity and the temp was fine. The lock smith wasn't going to charge me cause he couldn't get in so I tipped him $50 for showing up on Saturday with the right tools and we were both happy. Sorry guys for bringing this thread back up!!! Yes I have searched high and low for an answer! I have the same problem as jeffrored92.!! (jeffrored92, if you see this please chime in!).

Well this is how my problem started. Suddenly the lock on my car just stopped working over winter months. The inside and outside handles work fine.

Problems I have on the driver’s door:-
1) Inner door lock **** cable has come away from the ****. The **** has no resistance and flips up and as though nothings connected to it.
2) I can not unlock the door using the key or the inside lock. As I turn the key to unlock, I feel resistance. So it's jammed in lock position.

What I've already done.
1) Removed the outer door handle and played with both rods hoping it would open it but no joy!!.
2) Checked the plastic clips which holds the rods in place and there fine.
3) Sprayed WD40 on to the lock mechanism.
4) Removed the inside handle cover and I see 2 cables one attached to the handle and one into the lock. Using a pair of long nose pliers I’ve tried to give the locking cable a few tugs but it didn’t budge and felt stuck.
5) Removed the outer weather strip and had a poke around near the bottom of the locking rod. No joy either..

I have been doing the above procedures religiously for past 5 days but I have had no luck in getting the door to unlock.

I really don’t want to destroy my door card to get it open!!!

I know there is a possibly to get it open the same way as jeffrored92 but I don’t know what part of the locking mechanism I should be pulling on with the coat hanger to release the lock.

Does anyone have any pics?

I have a crate of beer for the person who helps me get my door open!!!!!!!

 

I've spent the whole day trying and can't seem to get the door unlocked. It's such a pain in the ***

Hopefully the weather will be ok and I will try again tomorrow..

In the meantime if anyone who's had a similar experience please chime in. What's seems to be a few minute job is taking for ever!!

Taking the door panel off is no big deal. 3 or 4 screws around the side.
1. remove the triangle blacks from the window sides, they pop off just pull evenly to not break.
2. remove the cup from around the door handle/lock. It has one screw under the cover at rear.
3. remove 3-4 screws around the outside of the door panel
4. panel is held on by push-pin type plastics. you want to pull out from the bottom and lift UP, it has two guide pins on the top that you lift up and off of.
5. unplug the window switch and mirror switch.

What you have will look like this (without the silver sound dampner).
As you can see the assembly is easy to access and you'll likely find the problem.

Thanks for replying. Excellent guide for taking the door card off once the door’s open but I wish I was at that stage!! Unfortunately that’s not my problem at the moment..

The driver’s door is shut in locked position and I’m unable to unlock it and get the door open, as previously stated. Therefore I need to get the door open so I’m able to get the door card off and see what the problem is.

I just need a pic or someone to guide me to what I need to pull up from the locking mechanism inside the door to get it unlocked and opened.

pull out the window seal and you will more easily see the lock and handle rods. move the handle and you will see which that is so you need to work the other.

and try a thicker oil in the keyhole, WD40 won't really work the tumblers loose if they are sticking.

as for this thread, it's almost easier to describe than to have a broken window and missing stereo/belongings. an FD isn't something you leave out in a bad area unattended anyways, it is extremely simple to get started once inside as well. invest in an alarm, keep it nearby or stored indoors at night.

 

Thanks for your reply. I have already taken the outer window seal off and played with the locking rod.
The lock itself is fine, though the rod connected to it is jammed/stuck and it’s not disengaging the lock.

 

Looking down in the middle of the door, I can see where the lock rod goes into the mechanism but there is some kind of white plastic casing protecting it and it’s stopping me seeing the bottom end of the rod, that’s connected into the mechanism. I had a pull with a hook around that area but nothing come of it..

I just need to know what part I need to pull on with a hook to get it unlocked??

I have spent days trying to get this door open with various methods but it’s not having none of it!!

Surely I can’t be the only RX7 owner who’s had this problem? Or am I!!

TpCpLaYa was kind enough to send me details on how to get the door unlocked, I have tried but it's unfortunately it's not unlocking.

The common unlocking method is not working and seems to be used when the keys have been locked inside the car.

My problem as mentioned is the lock rod is jammed in the mech itself!!! I can get the lock rod to move slightly with force and i can see it moving in the mech but it's not unlocking..

I believe I need to unlock direct via lock mech and not the locking rod just like jeffrored92 did.

My problem is I don't know what part of the mech I need to pull onto to disengage the lock!! Once I know where to hook I'm sure I will get open.

I've spent a week trying to get the f***** open!!!

Any help is appreciated..

 

Have you tried one of the pop a lock guys? bet they wouldn't charge you if they couldn't get you in.

 

I mean if you get in the car through the passenger door and get to the drivers seat and use ALL YOUR MIGHT on the physical lock (in the door handle cup) and can't get it to budge then it's going to be A LOT harder I think to fix......only solution I see to a problem like this would be to get inside the panel somehow to access the guts directly...how, well that's the million dollar questions. It seems something(s) would have to be removed improperly(damaged) to get this access with the door stuck closed.
