Door Lock Apart? How to Re-do?
Thought we had a broken key in the passenger door from years past.
Turned out to be parts of the plastic flap that had broken and been pushed in by the key. Should have been an easy fix ---
But I managed to have the whole lock disassembled and now stuck on getting it back together.
1. all the tumbler? bars appear to be the same, does it matter which goes where?
2. tried to put the tumbler assembly back into the case, but must have gone in wrong, now it's stuck. Can't pull it back out and I don't want to force it if there's a trick.
Nice to learn about how it's built, but now I'd be happy just to get it back together.
Key would only go in part way:
You can see the melted, broken plastic pieces.
8 tiny springs, 8 tumbler type gates
back together
Tumblers/gates all appear to be the same
Now -- Stuck trying to go back together.

You should have taken note of where the gates went they may all look the same but if that was the case the lock wouldn't be very good. Did you clear out all the debris? I don't know how you can get it back out if all the gates wont line up. Is there a hole in the front? Sometimes you can put a paperclip through the hole to hold the gates in the right spot or you might be able to line them back up from there.

Yep, I should have noted where they went -- actually wasn't planning on them coming out, but they did. The gates are awfully close to each other though. I'm sure I can get a locksmith to look at the key and figure it out, although I'd like to get it myself.

Really, I'd take it to a locksmith. I've actually had them re-do the tumbers on a door lock for me (this was for a project car I had) - I gave them the key, and told them to make it work in the lock. They re-did everything while I waited for just a few bucks.
It's fiddly how it all goes together and this is a case where an expert's help is a good idea. Also, you can probably get it done fast, locally, and for VERY cheap, so that all works.
