You think an FD is expensive own... try getting a tuneup a Ferrari sometime! A very good friend of mine has a 550 Maranello, try $5600.00 for a minor tuneup! And he does that every 5000 miles (works out to about once a year).

I guess it's all relative to the price of your toys :-).

U know ive been thinking and I reckon its kind of a true that a majority of FD owners tend to be rather dramatic when it comes to dealing with the issues that accompany these cars. I find myself being dragged into the garage for endless hours tinkering away almost hoping there might be something, anything wrong enough to stay out there all night. Then you chuck in a rotary and thats extrapolated ten fold as you desperatly look for problems to fix that justify what in actuallity is no more than an expensive drama over a vehicle.
The cruelty of it is that if the FD had fu*k all problems, we'd all have fu*k all to talk about, and what fun would that be?

Well, if you know what to do to it to make it reliable, or you have a good shop near you, and you stay up on maintanence, the FD can be ok. However, if you get shitty advice, don't have a repsectable shop near you, or don't have the money to put in to get it checked out every other month or so, chances are the this bitch will get you...........hard.
There is no such thing as a cheap part, and if you go to someone other than a true RX7 guy, you end up doing things twice, three times, sometimes still not fixing the problem.
It's alot easier now to own one than it was even 5 years ago. People are mucg more knowledgable about the car, and it seems like there is more support than there was then.
If you keep your power reasonable, and do maintanace.........yes.......this car can not hit you too hard.
But, you have to set yourself up to be in a good position.
That being said.........when it runs right(like mine is now), I swear it's the most rewarding car to drive. I haven't had anthing come close.

When compared to my last two chevy trucks my FD has been a dream to own.
My 88 chevy K 2500 truck blew a transmission, heater, radiator, plastic engine pulleys, belt tensioner, freeze plugs, power steering pump, shocks, fuel pump and various seals-n-gaskets before 100K miles. Hell,I just put a new transmission into my 97 chevy truck and it has about 80K miles on it now.
I told my Chevy nightmare story to a Ford owner and he laughed. It turned out that he was having similar problems with his ford and he was thinking of buying a Chevy.
Anyway, I have come to the conclusion that if it has more than 40 RWHP (Honda) it will cost you $$$ to own.

I bought my FD 9 years ago and have open tracked about 8 times in the last few years and have autocrossed it for the last 6 years (averaging 16 events a year). I haven't had any major problems. The only parts I've broken are the swaybar mounts and an endlink, otherwise the has been very reliable. I'm still running the original motor and turbos, but the turbos are starting to leak oil at max boost. I paid 18.5k in 1995 and have about 6k in mods which averages to about $2722 a year for the car.

So in my case, the car has been relatively INEXPENSIVE for me to own.
