don't have the "fan mod," rad fans stay on after car is off

It was pretty hot today and I was driving my car a little hard on my way home from work, so after I cooled the turbos for five minutes (as always) I turned the key to the "electronics on" position to run the radiator fans for a few minutes. I took out the key and they are stayed on! They have been on for about five minutes and they are still going... Does the stock ecu keep the fans on if the car is hot? Or do I have some other issue. I've done this many times before and never had this problem. I had a new rad put in two days ago, but I don't see how that should cause this to happen. Any advice? Thanks.

If you have had the fan recall performed on your car, or have a 94 or 95, there is a small control unit that will run the fans for 10 minutes after shutoff IFF the engine control unit had the fans running for two or more minutes PRIOR to shutoff. I'm guessing the fans were running during your cool off, but you couldn't hear them. If this is true, you may be running hotter than normal, which is why this hasn't happened before. You just had the radiator replaced. Are you sure all the air bubbles are out of the system? Also, what are you using to monitor engine temps? The stock gauge? Or a linearized stock gauge or aftermarket one? I only ask because the stock gauge does NOT tell you anything about engine temps that is useful.

So yes, the stock ECU on recalled '93s and all 94 & 95's, should run the fans for ten minutes after shutoff if they've been on for two minutes prior to shutoff. This feature is often taken advantage of for the less involved fan mod, wherein you tap into the connector provided to test this feature.

Thank you, they just stopped. I have a 95, and the fans did not run any longer than normal prior to engine shut-off. I did run the fans for about two or three minutes before turning off the electronics however. I've had the car since January and today was the first hot day I drove it (about 85 degrees), the crap stock gauge stayed just below the 1/2 mark just like always (never trusted it). Maybe the air bubbles are not out of the system yet? It's a Koyo radiator, so I trust it. I'll see what happens tommorow.

Once the engine is cool, pop the filler cap and check the coolant level. If it is low, add more (I know, duh!). Keep looking for a few days to make sure it is topped off.

Do the gauge linearization mod. It's pretty easy (I think, anyway) and unless you are really ****, I can't see needing to know the EXACT temp ALL the time. Once you have a gauge that reads real world, a fan mod will not be far behind... it gets THAT HOT!!
