I removed mine and was wondering if it does, the car gets pretty hot so I thought it could damage the paint on my hood

 

I went years without an insulator and never noticed any damage to the paint.

I removed it because it was disintegrating. I've also read people recommending it's removal for cooling.

 

removed mine about 3 months ago no problems at all and since it burned in my shop fire i dont guess i have a choice about putting it back on anyways lol

 

my friend doesnt have it on his car, up to 2 weeks ago he had twins. i have mines on with a t78 and killed the paint on that area. he now has a to4r, well see what happens.

havent had mine on since i bought the car 1 1/2 years ago paint still show room quality. never notice any cooling diff. between mine and my buddies fd.

Why do you think Mazda put it there? I'll bet they had a good reason. Likely to protect the hood from heat. I'm keeping mine .

 

Most likely. Supposedly it has some fire suppression abilities... but we all know how well that works.

 

Someone recently suggested that it was designed (at least in part) to combat flame should you have an engine fire. Don't know about that. I've never had one and paint is unaffected.
I really doubt that NOT having one affects cooling one way or another. MAYBE heatsoak, but not cooling.

 

i could see it helping with cooling A BIT....but not enough to notice on a temp gauge.

The hood on the miata, rx8, rx7....ect are fairly thin aluminum and it transmitts heat very well....so it will help absorb and release some of that heat...but not a lot...

as far as hurting the paint....think about a black car in the sun....the surface of the paint get hot enough to burn you pretty bad (in a place like AZ, TX or FL...ect) so the surface temp of the paint has to get close to 180-200* if not more.....so as long as you wash the car and care for the paint....it should be fine.

I think a lot of it also has to do with how the turbo is mounted....if its close to the hood, i would put a turbo blanket on the turbine housing or put some heat tape on the underside of the hood.

 

id never have turbo blanket aye, seen too many go up in flames and heard of even more

 

I ripped mine off when I bought the car about a year ago. No issues so far.

Regarding the cooling issue: whether or not it helps with cooling depends on how well the stuff conducts and retains heat. I'm not too sure what the stuff is made of that they put in the RX-7 but if it's a fire supressant as some have suggested then I'd imagine that the thing has a very high heat retention and low (heat/thermal) conductivity. I'm just throwing stuff out there, I've got to back this up with some test data or something, but I thin kyou guys get the idea

During steady-state driving (say on a freeway trip for 10 minutes or more at a constant engine load) it won't matter, but as someone else had suggested, it WILL (assuming what I said about the conductivity and heat retention is true) make a difference when you shut off the car or are sitting at a stoplight or in stop-and-go traffic.

 

...I replaced all the touring insulation including underhood with this stuff. light weight, cheap and effective.
