Does a Lightened Flywheel usually mean you need to upgrade your clutch?
Does a Lightened Flywheel usually mean you need to upgrade your clutch?
I was thinking about getting a lightened flywheel. If i do this will i need to upgrade my clutch? Or would the stock clutch be fine with the new 9.5lb flywheel? I replaced my clutch 8k miles ago with a OEM one. Also, what kind of powerband increase would i see with a lightened flywheel? Would i really feel the difference? Thanks guys!

Your powerband becomes broader with a lightened flywheel - not incredibly much, but your power comes on earlier and it will help your turbos spool quicker. Even though you don't really gain much hp - 3 or 4 rwhp at most - the car just accelerates faster - a noticeable upgrade. Any modded FD should have a Heavy Duty ACT clutch - the clutch pedal pressure is only a hair (if any) stiffer than stock and can support much more hp than the OEM. You have to pull the tranny for either so the clutch and flywheel should be done at the same time (5th gear synchro too if it needs replaced)
You don't need to upgrade the clutch because you get a lightweight flywheel. The flywheel really isn't much harder on the clutch, but you will have to slip it a little more than you used to.
You'll notice better acceleration in 1st and somewhat in 2nd. Otherwise you won't notice a difference.
The flip side is that usually if you get a lightweight flywheel your planning or have other mods. The stock clutch isn't good for much more than stock so you might as well upgrade while your in there. I've bought 3 ACT clutches for different cars and I've been really happy with them. If your not planning on going crazy with mods look for a street/strip type clutch.

I have a RB aluminum flywheel and put in a new stock clutch. It works just fine, even did some drag racing. A new stock clutch is more durable than you think. They have been redesigned over the years and can handle a fair amount of hp. Now my FD only has a RB intake with K&N, downpipe, cat back, and flywheel as the major mods so I'm not pushing major hp. Racing Beat told me that the stocker was good for up to 400 hp. Not sure about that but I was worried about abrupt engagement with an aftermarket clutch and the lightened flywheel causing me to stall the motor. I wanted to get used to the flywheel first. We'll see how it works. Been running it hard for 1 1/2 years with this setup.
