I got my engine back from my rebuilder and went to put the transmission and starter on and i have two holes down either side of the transmission . Does anyone have a picture of what goes over these? or can tell me ?
( Yes, i'm going to clean up the transmission - I'm just testing my clutch/ hydraulic release bearing clearance)
On the exhaust/intake side, there is a small metal plate or shield which is semilunar that goes there. It covers the hole so that no debris or any foreign object gets into the bell housing. I would try to find that piece to avoid any future possible problems. The other side I am not sure about without looking at my engine.

Best picture I can find of the cover plate. If you're standing behind the engine there should also be a small cover plate at about 11:30 which you can also see in the pic.
I found out the one on the turbo side is because mine was automatic at one point and has an automatic rear place ( i believe that's where the automatic starter was)
