Question Does this '93 look like a "good buy"

I've been checking out the boards for a while now, this is my first post. Please be nice.

What do you all think of this FD for sale? Link: http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...&ac_afflt=none

I e-mailed the owner, and he says both the tranny and engine were replaced with factory rebuilt units at the dealership. It has sunroof and BOSE CD, which package would that be? Is this the one with the crazy snake tubes in the trunk?

The car has had 3 owners, and is currently used only as a "weekend" car. Is this RX-7 one I should definitely consider?

Arrow nah!

Not really a good buy. with $19000 you can get one a lot better. Try looking at the forum/cars/autotrader/thepartstrader/ etc...

So price is the only issue? What about the car itself?

I just need to know if I'm looking at the right kinds of cars...

I wouldn't pay that much for a 93. If that's in your range try to get a newer one. Many important improvements were made after the 93 model year.

Well, it always IS possible the interior and exterior are in immaculate condition.

It's true you can probably find a 94 or a 95 for that price. I'd say go take a look at it and see what shape its in.

Don't forget, the dealer itself could have rebuilt the transmission. This is not uncommon, especially with the 5th gear synchro problem.

Ok, give us a full list of cars under $20k with ALL of the following features from the factory:

0-60 in 4.9s or better
Can pull almost 1g on the skidpad
Top Speed of about 160mph
60-0 braking distance of 112ft or better

It suddenly seems like an excellent deal, doesnt it?

turbos

When you look at any seven don't forget to pop off one of the boost
tubes off and see if there is oil in the tube if so the turbo seals are bad
if you still want the car tell him that the turbos are bad and make up a figure that it will caost between 3500 and 4000 dollars to fix when it actually a lot less but usually they won't be abel to find out.

Thats what I did when I drove twelve hours to look at my 93 yellow R1.

As the others have suggested, the price is definetly high..especially since there don't seem to be any mods listed..even the realiability ones and gauges..these are a must..I'd say somewhere around 15k is a decent price for that car..regardless of the rebuilt engine and tranny...

Just to give you an idea, I paid 17.5 for a mint 95 (built in 12/95) that's montego blue PEP with tan leather, rear spoiler, PFS centerforce clutch, greddy exhaust, and boost gauge. 50k miles. The compression test I did was perfect, too. Carfax was clean.

It was a good deal, but the point is that good deals will pop up.

Are you kidding me, it is true that all that flybye wrote is true except for the part about the money. for 19 grand, you could get a better car and/or a car which is totally modded (such as with all the relibility mods as well as possibly a single turbo upgrade and/or a bodykit)! dont be a fool and settle for that car, im sure you can find one which is much cheaper and in better condition then that one especially when you live in the mainland (im in hawaii and good fd's are hard to find here but still, my brother found one for about 12 grand that is in great condition, did not have a rebuild which has less then 60k on the stock engine which was never touched by the incompetent dealer mechanics and thats from a dealer which jacked up the price!!!)! I say pass on this one, another one may be right around the corner.

Thanks alot guys! I'm definitely going to try to look for lower-mileage cars. Anything to delay potential problems down the road. That does mean more $$$ up front, however.

I've been doing my homework and already have the first few reliability mods planned out.

How does $18k sound for a '93 VR with 35k miles, clean title, but 5th gear grind?

I think you have to actually see the car to decide, because just looking at an ad isn't revealing enough. For example, paint condition is hard to tell in pictures, and immaculate paint is worth a lot since there is no low cost cure for chipped/oxidized paint, so there's a lot of added value there. Same goes for compression. It all depends on the condition, and mileage or age doesn't necessarily indicate this. All else equal it does, but this is never the case. For $19k, the car better be damn near perfect though. I'd try to find something more in the $15k-$17k range though.

Read my first post. I also could have purchased a 94 MBM PEP (built Jan 94) with tan leather, Bose, sunroof, viper car alarm with 46k for $13.8. Compression tested fine and it didn't have any noticeable boost issues. It didn't have a rear spoiler, and it was as pristine as the one I bought, though the gearbox was fine. I went for the 95 mentioned earlier for $17.5 because the owner was an Rx-7 enthusiast, and I saw Rx-7 parts in his garage along with oil containers and tools. And the parts conveyed.

If you're going for 93's, you should be able to break into the sub $13 range, at least through bargaining. You can also get automatics for a lot cheaper, but you have to be willing to have an automatic. (It costs about $3500 to have the auto to manual conversion done, and that's when you're buying used parts).

great price if car has maintenance records and is in good shape. Do not discoutn the value of a properly maintained FD. 4k over another instance of a car is nothing if it runs right.
