Do the brake cooling ducts on the wheel liners have a purpose on touring models?

Do the brake cooling ducts on the wheel liners have a purpose on touring models?
I was just wondering if the cooling ducts that run along the top of the wheel liner are functional if you dont have the R1 lip? I just dont see how air can get in there otherwise.

The ducts that run in the fender liners are for the oil coolers. On non-R1 cars, the drivers side is quite functional. The passenger side can easily be made functional if you install another oil cooler. Also see RonKMiller's "Hot-air-out" ghetto mod. Definately another effective use of these ducts.
