Disabling Accelerated Warmup System (AWS)

I got my car back from the tuner recently and he handed me a bag with a few parts in it. Some of them I expected, some of them I did not. One of the things I did not expect was the hose that goes between the AWS valve and the top of the intake elbow. He said that since I was using a PFC that I needed to remove this bit as the JDM cars didn't have it.

Fine, that makes sense. Except, when I installed the PFC I followed Dale Clark's guide, and thus disconnected the wire for the AWS valve -- so, I'm covered, right? Should I have the wire disconnecting AND the pipe removed/blocked off? Or is just disconnecting the wire enough? A assume just disconnecting the wire is enough, since presumably the valve is in the shut position by default...

youre over thinking it.... disconnecting the wires is the same as removing it entirely. as far as the car is concerned the system does not exist when its not plugged in

Yep, once that wire is disconnected it's a dead system. It is nice to totally remove it, that AWS hose can get in the way. To do it fully you'd need a block off plate for the AWS solenoid and a rubber cap and clamp for the nipple on the TB elbow.

034 motorsports is a good source for cap for the elbow.

The AWS is a non issue on PFC and even on stock ECU. On my '95 stock car it never ran if you left the car in gear when you parked it. It only runs when it's in neutral. On the EPA tests, the vehicle always starts in neutral. The EPA would never let Mazda get away with that today.

^ Is that so? Very interesting! Classic defeat device action, would/should have been an emissions recall.

I removed the inlet pipe with a block off plate and fitted a JDM compression pipe (w/o nipple) on my fd. Use it that way with the OEM ECM. Still have the valve in place, and plugged in.

I think they disabled the 3000 RPM startup in gear so if you did start the car in gear, it went to 3000, and you took your foot off the clutch, the car didn't lurch forward and flatten Grandma against the garage wall.

That's probably a DOT overriding the EPA.
