Are you sure you have the correct manual?

The procedure is pretty well explained on pages M-38 - M-39.

The specified preload is 12-15 inch lbs.

Notice that this is not ft. lbs.

You will need to get an inch lb. torque wrench to measure it.

I did not realice that it was lbs/inchs!!!
I just buy the proper torque wrench to do it , just wating till it get to my home.
Im case i have all the other thing done.

new problem , it looks like easy , but when i tight the diff , it dosent work at all and get everything stuck , so I need a set of shims , do you know where to buy them a set cheap , not like the mazdatrix one that is $18 each. plus every shim of the pinion is $11

I have seen some american diff shims and they are $28 set of everything.

 

Call Ray Crowe at Malloy for shim prices.

I bought them from MazdaMotorsports for 10.15 each for the diff shims.
The pinion shims are about 6.00 IIRC. That's with a racer discount - you have to be a registered racer to buy from them.

The shims you find for other diffs for 28.00 will not work.
I think a lot of us have looked for an alternative shim. I spent a fair bit of time on google, the phone and a trip to a transmission shop - you need the Mazda parts.

 

Bought everything in Mazda japan , Tokyo $6 each shim
just lots cheaper.
I got a torq wrench In lb snap on and everything to do it properly , so I hope that I will be able to take some pics and finish the job soon.

just installed 4.77 in my spare diff, and hopefully get it swapped tomorrow morning w/ no issues. I have an autox at 4:00 so if all goes well I will be testing the new gears.... if all goes wrong my gf will tell me shes pregnate causing me to drop the diff carrier on my head and induce a lifelong comma which will enable her to have her babys daddy move into my house and they can live off my retirement while I waste away, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

btw I was able to reuse all the original shims shims/brngs, just a new crush sleeve=P

 

How hard was the install of the new gears? Let us know how you like them....also, would be interested to know your opinion on the 4.77 gear set for an FD street car..??

 

install is more awkward and messy than difficult, unless you have a good way to hold the diff. R&R time for the carrier took me around 3 hours. I did not remove the exh which would have made it much easier. I set the preload at 10 inlb considering the bearings were not changed.

 

OK, I like the gears on the street, 1st is obviously quick but I did not launch much, mostly rolling. I am running a 25.7 tire which is part of the reason I went with the 4.77. 60mph indicated is actually about 53mph which will take some getting used to. I must say that the butt dyno likes the gears. I will report back my autox experince...

 

ok, so traveling in the intrastate is not a joy, lotsa road noise which was not a surprise. However in the auotx the gears were awesome, plenty of torque and really no lag coming out of 2nd gear slow corners ... Love them for autox and spirited driving

 

thanks for the update...is your car pretty close to stock, i.e., stock sequential twins? It sounds like you'd recommend the 4.77 gears for spirited street driving..? The biggest drawback is crusing on the highway...

 

New gauges for the new diff ratio.
Hope that I can cal the speedo with the blue dimmer.

 

Well basically I mess out with the tolerance of the pinion so it sounds arrowns 120mph.

So I build another rear diff with the 4.444 ratio.

Hope this time works fine, it should, it have the OK of the differentials experts around here.

By the way the 2nd time was much easier that the 1st time!!!
