differential install question

Okay I got a cusco differential, 2 new bearings and 2 gaskets for each side where the drive shaft attaches. So all i have to do is unbolt the rear housing and the bearing cap and the diff should plop right out? Then i have to get the new bearings pressed onto the new differential and swap the shims from the old diff to the new one. Is that all I have to do? The shims are what sets the pre-load correct? I'm assuming there is no need to change the shims if I'm just replacing the differential and nothing else. I tried searching for differential install threads but came up with none.

Thanks

You are dealing in thousands of an inch here, so you might want a good shop to set it up for you.

I talked to a employee of benchmark transmission, he was pretty short with me and kind of pissed me off so I'm not sure if I'll be going back there. I asked him for a price and of course he couldn't give me one because he had to check to see exactly what had to be done on the 7s diff. I told him I had the factory service manual he could look at, but he said it didn't matter. So I'll have to search around and see what else i can come up with. Mazda gave me a price of $600 and thats just to pull the old diff out of the housing and put the new one in. To me thats a little rediculous.

I actually have a KAAZ lsd on my FD
and f#%k did I have a hard *** time to find somebody to rebuild my diff.
I finally took it to kaazusa where I bought the diff and they did a perfect job.
I mean I went to every rotary specialist in so-cal and nobody could do it.

alright well i took it to my friends shop and we installed it. It pretty much plucks right in, all you have to do is get new bearings pressed on. Luckily he has a press so i didn't need to go visit anyone for that. The shims that were in that were already in there were fine. We checked the backlast and it was between .07 - .08 of an inch...or is it .007? Either way there wasn't excessive movement.

I had a T2 LSD installed into my FD pumpkin. I removed the stock Torsen (takes 5 minutes, then brought him the T2 LSD with bearings/races and said set the backlash and install it.

Took it to a guy in his 50's who has been working on diffs for 30 years. He took one look at it and said man is that small. He works on bus differentials and HD truck stuff.

$125 out the door. I wouldn't pay more than $200. If a rotary "specialist" can't set it up... then they are just a hack shop anyway.
