So apparently there is difference between LHD and RHD ignition cables...I am not familiar with this so can anybody clear this up?

And I am not talking about the 8bit and 16bit variations. But actual physical differences in the cables or maybe coil location? I compared photos online of the JDM and USDM ignition coil brackets and they look identical to me.

I'm asking because I have been told that some ignition cables sold on the Japanese market might not fit properly on the LHD FD's...is this true or BS?

 

Mazda made changes to the location of the coils for Version 4~6. So Ver 1~3 JDM coil location will look the same as USDM.

If you have a Version 4~6 JDM you should be very careful to understand how the coils are hooked up.

Moreover, make sure your mechanic understands.

Also best to check regardless. Although the JDM wiring diagrams are in Japanese, They are easy enough to follow/ Helpful to have the Japanese/Chinese characters for the colours handy.

Mazda was frequently changing the wiring harnesses especially in the first year. Its seems they would avoid having redundant wires in a harness if a particular car did not have a particular feature, say cruise control.

The result is that for each wiring harness there were sometimes many different P/N.

Ideally you would identify which harness P/N matched your cars VIN specifically.

(The parts catalogues are helpful in that regard, although there are some lists you can find on line.)

If you find a replacement harness that is missing some wires you need, you likely are best to run those lines independently.

 

in the US we get a condensed harness, for example the engine harness we have available has all of the plugs for everything (EGR solenoid, and EGR position) and if you have a car without that those connectors are just unused
Japan is probably similar, although i don't know specifics

 

There is a habit to call the Emission Harness the Engine Harness and the Engine Harness, something else (starter/bateery harness?).

It seems to me when people say engine harness they commonly mean the emissions harness.

As this miss-naming is deeply engrained, best to refer back to the wiring manuals.

This applies to Version 1~3 cars.

 

I don't think there is an "Ignition Harness" per se.

For earlier cars the coil harness does not appear in the parts manuals diagrams, but it is listed in the tables alongside the Emissions Harness. The Ver.6 manual, at least, the coil harness appears in the diagram.

The circuit that comprises the "igintion" set-up, runs through a number of harnesses.
