Difference between these two front calipers?

I know the ones on the left are from my FD but why are the other ones different? Are they Turbo II or 94+?

They are turbo II calipers. AFAIK, they are interchangeable with the FD calipers. I have seen more than one FD running the older style TII calipers.

Yeah I see the black ones for sale in the 3rd gen section as FD calipers sometimes. Unless for some odd reason my car has Turbo II brakes...

^^ The black ones ARE FD calipers.

The ones on the left are the four piston calipers installed on every four piston caliper S4 and S5.

Yeah, I read your original post wrong. The black ones are standard FD calipers. The ones from your car on the left are FC calipers, but work just fine on FD's. I think some early FD's came with those calipers from the factory because you aren't the only person with them.

Wow that is interesting. Yeah my car was one of the cars manufactured in 92. Is there any significant braking advantage between the two that anyone is aware of? I have a set of each in working order and don't mind taking the time to change/rebuild calipers.

Later calipers are marginally thicker...and presumably more rigid as a result, might need to be a Danica to detect the difference though.

My R1 is an early build and came with the 'standard' FD calipers......they've since been deep-sixed and replaced with some beefy Racing Brake pieces
