Didnt Drive it home....
it got towed to the shop.
I just today bought my 1993 RX7 R1, I even used this site to track it down....now on to the feature presentation.
We were driving it home from Long Island to Norhtern New Jersey. About an Hour and a half each way. Bringing it home, we sat in traffic. I was not driving btw. and we got over the bridge and my father pulled into a gas station and told me that the car was overheating, crap.
So we get some antifreeze from the Gas Station, and add it to what we though was the resivoir...but it was the overflow. Now, we didnt add anything to the radiator, but everything we added to the overlow found its way out the bottom of the car. I have a hunch, ok I HOPE this isnt normal, and if it isn't could a cracked overflow cause my car to overheat?
PS when the coolant leaked out, it was right next to the passenger side front tire. but a little bit towards the front. HEEEEEEEELP ME

Sounds like your overflow bottle is cracked. I've heard of that happening before. If that is the case, just get a new one. No big deal. You will want to get under the car and look to make sure. Hopefully your engine didn't get too hot and fry an O-ring.

when we first started the car before all this happened, there was some smoke, but the car had sat for over 3 weeks. so i assumed it was normal. After the incident, i hadnt seen any.

It got towed to Rennsport in Hackensack....i dont think its the coolant seals, the coolant didnt leak from the motor...it was more like the overflow tank area, almost as if the line from the AST to the Overflow wasnt there.

The reservoir is only for the coolant overflow and dipstick. It is not where you add coolant. It will overflow out, as it is vented withthat horizontal tube in the pic below. Coolant is addded at the thermostat housing cap and sometimes the AST(BTW, replace both caps). When you cold start the car, unscrew the thermostat cap and check for bubbles. Is it hard to start and crank over an unusually long time before it fires?
And good job hijacking Velociracers' thread.

O' back to the original thread. You have a bad radiator cap that is not sealing properly and their for not retaining the 15psi or so pressure in the cooling system that raises the boiling point of the coolant... This is causing the coolant to boil and empty the system and over filling and eventually emptying the coo1ant resiviour.. get a new cap and hope it didn't hurt anything.. You need the one that goes on the air separator tank, not the engine.
