DETONATION..i searched to no avail

Ok i did search this but couldn't find the exact answer to my question....so here goes...(I have a stock 93fd)today i'm driving....i hit about 6000rpms in 4th gear and i hear a LOUD almost like an explosion...i honestly thought one of my tires had blown....anyway, i stop get out check the tires...and to my surprise...it wasn't a blown tire....so then i think...wtf could it of been....so naturally i think engine...but my car is still running....i pop the hood and see nothing out of the ordinary (but i'm a newb to rx7s sooo...enuf said there)...well i get back in the car and it is running just as smooth as it was b4 the sound (no smoke..no oil leaking)...so my question....is detonation ever this loud...or any ideas on wtf made this sound, and give me any other advice you might have.

detonation sounds like popcorn popping.

however when that happend to me it was a sideseal...boom...gone...but then my car ran like ****.

dont be driving at 140 mph again until you get it figured out. ok??

if you want to be sure...change your fuel filter...dump in some injector cleaner...and put it on a dyno for one pull to see what your afrs are. if you are in the 11s all the way across then it wasnt detonation.

thats the safest route i can think of

Detonation is most often not that loud, in fact it is even inaudible to the human ear a lot of the time. My guess is that you just ran over something that shot out when your tire passed over or something.. who knows. Just keep a watchful eye on everything you should be fine, maybe the get the car up in the air and inspect everything underneath and take a close look in the engine bay. If you had detonated that loudly your car probably wouldn't run at all, so feel good knowing it wasn't the motor.

If your car is running fine, it was probally just a back fire.
how long have you owned your car?

I've owned my car right at 2 weeks...had it looked over by jerry strickland at cleanandfast in raleigh, NC...dunno if any of you know him...but he seems to know his stuff and he's been working on the cars a long time. First thing he said was...GET A DP...he said he couldn't stress it enough...so that's what i'm looking at getting...a pettit dp and probably the racing beat cat back with the dual tips ...any of you got an opinion on this exhaust?

My car was making a lot of noise too. Turns out it was my neighbors cat that I had run over.

although this is loud as all hell and can scare the **** out of you, his car would not be running just as fine as it was before.
