streetport questions

I've searched so please read on.

I have a 93 R1 that I recently purchased about 2 weeks ago. It came with a streetported motor from Rotorsports Racing installed October of last year. Other than that and a hose job it is stock.

I'm about to start with the reliability mods, and I really want to add a downpipe as one of them.

My question is whether or not I can do that without adding an ECU. I assume the streetport counts as at least one (and maybe more) in the 3 mod rule of thumb.

So, can I do this safely?

Should I already have an ECU?

Which ones can people recommend from personal experience that work well with streetports?

Will I need a boost controller?

If you are not happy with my questions please reply with some useful info like search terms I might not have thought of instead of blasting me.

Thanks,
Ray

I would suggest that you at least get a remapped ecu running off a ported motor. Yes the down pipe is a good idea but I wouldn't put off and ecu upgrade much longer. I would probably opt for the ecu before the down pipe to at least see what your air/fuel is. At least then you can monitor your car.

i drove my car with a street port for a couple months with the stock ecu . ran ok, just keep the boost down, or if you have worn out, oil leaking 100 k mile turbos like me there's nothing to worry about!

Get an apexi power fc so as your mod list grows all you have to do is tune it accordingly. I went the cheaper route with a pettit ecu and now I am kicking myself. Furthermore, make sure one of your first mods is a boost gauge so you can monitor it. Also look at a water temp gauge, all aluminum radiator, aluminum ast, and then the dp. This will make sure that your cooling system is in tip top shape before starting anything else that might cause problems.

The boost and temp gauges are in the mail. Thought they should have been here yesterday, but you know how the mail can be.

So, the Power FC seems the way to go? Are most people that have them happy with them? Do most people set them and leave them or adjust them all the time?

I would like to hear about the other ECUs that can handle a streetport too just to know.

Thanks for the info,
ray

on the pettit unlimited you can change out the chips to go with new mods(streetport, etc). the fuel maps seem rich, but i'd rather be safe than sorry. i think one guy ran an 11.1 on the twins with it, so it can't be all that bad.

Cam at Pettit has also programmed a few PFCs, but so has Dave at KD Rotary in PA (since he is closer to you)

Dave has an inhouse dyno for tuning as well and is undoubtly one of the best shops in the US. Travelling that far may seem a bit silly for just tuning, but you will soon realize just how fun long drives with the FD are Heck, he might even be able to reprogram your PFC for the mods you got and mail it back to you. I really don't know how he is doing it these days since I aven't been up there in a while

Ray,

If you decide to go the PFC or AEM route, we (Columbus crew) would be glad to help you tune it! I'm not going to be able to make the DragRaces & Party @ Aarons this weekend in Detroit, or we could of had a complete discussion about PFC, mods, etc.

(I'm dropping a new large streetported pineapple racing engine in my relatively modifed car this weekend. Badog and I have done all the tuning on it ourselves ... shooting for 500rwhp+ with the current setup, in sig. new streetported motor missing from sig)

nocab72,

Thanks for the offer. I will definitely take you up on it when I decide what I am going to do. Mind if I pm you in the future?

I plan to ask a lot of questions at the MI getogether tomorrow. Hopefully that will be informative.

I'd also be interested in making a trek to colombus just for the hell of it. I like drives.

As far as my plans with the car go. I only really want to do the dp and cb, radiator, ast, and gauges for the time being. Things like an intake and intercooler will come in the more distant future.

I just want something a little quicker than stock and reasonably reliable (won't blow up on me). I think I will stay as close to 10psi as I can for awhile too with more boost only coming after I have enough money for a mistake.

Any more opinions/experience with streetports and ECUs is welcome.

Thanks again,
ray

Dick Lambert just got back from KDR and had his twin turbo and PFC tuned by Dave. He lives in WI. He said the car is awesome after tuning. He was running really rich before with the SR PFC tuning. He has 360 rwhp now and breaks the tires (S03s) loose in 2nd and 3rd gear.

If you are really interested in doing it right a trip to KDR might be worth your time and expense.
