Dead battery or alternator (charge light came on)?

Tonight just a few kms away from my house charge light as well as the warning light in the oil pressure gauge and the temperature gauge came on as I was standing at the traffic lights. I thought the car stalled but it was idling smooth although few times on the trip home afterwards it felt like it's about to stall on me so I kept the revs up.

At first I thought the battery was dead but when the warning lights first came on I pulled over and stopped the car and started it again, it started with no problems (2 or 3 times), so I'm thinking the problem may not be the battery.

As I was driving home I noticed as the revs and speed went up the charge and warning lights dimmed out and disappeared and as I slowed down and as revs came down the lights came on again.

It was and still is pouring down so I didn't look under the bonnet but I noticed some sort of electrical noise or some sort of a whine noise, maybe like a fuel pump whine but more like a mechanical or rotation related whine perhaps, I don't know. Anyway I noticed a whine as I revved the car.

The clearances on the front end of the car are not perfect so something might have gotten wet in the rain and puddles.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

same thing happened to me thanksgiving day, put a multimeter on the alt. and see if its charging or if you have a PFC you can monitor it through that.

Sounds like the symptoms of a failing alternator.
