Dash lights out

I just recently got home from deployment and started driving the fd again. It was going fine for a while, then when I turned it on one day, I saw a little smoke come out from behind my stereo and the dash lights went out. I figured the dimmer switch just went out, so I ordered a new one.

Today I put it in, and still, nothing worked. I did some searching and found some stuff on here, so I checked the TNS relay, which looked ok. I also checked and found that my Tail fuse was burned out so I put a new one in, but when I tried again, the lights still didn't turn on, and I got a little bit of smoke from the dimmer switch again. I had the radio out when I tried, and didn't see any burned wires or anything to show where the smoke is coming from. I also took the old switch apart, and don't see any burns inside it anywhere.

So I'm wondering if a bad TNS relay could cause this? How can I actually test to see if the relay is working? Is there anything else that I'm missing that could be causing this?

Thanks for any help you can give.
