God you're a putz! But at least a putz who is smart enough to get the tranny out. When I did mine it took a while to get out; putting it back in was the fun part. Two of us under car going
Is it in?
Go that way.
No THAT way.
Yeah, it's going....
goddamned this thing is heavy....
UGH! UGH! I can't feel my arms!
Shove it in already!
Is it in yet?
Push dammit!
grunt, grunt, grunt
AHHHHHHHHH! It's in!
Ninjak suggested to me jacking the front of the motor in order to tilt the back of the motor down; I think that's a good idea. Would have helped if I had thought of that...
I pull my motor in the morning; hope I don't look like you
Should have seen the rental guy when I drove up in a Corolla to put the engine hoist in...

Did you check out the pull the engine and tranny together thread?
You mentioned your going to pull the motor next, OK well the trans is out already so to late for any advice there.
When you put the motor back in do it with the trans attached.
For pulling the motor my advice is to leave ALL the wiring attached to the motor and trans. One harness pulls through the firewall (plugs into ECU) the other unplugs from the body on the pass side fender well. There are two big grey plugs, undo those. Undo positive lead from small fuse box to the large one. The battery terminals will stay with the motor.
I've pulled/installed about 10 motors now, last night I pulled the engine and trans in 2.5 hrs, no lift, no air tools, start to finish (in house cleaned up).
If you want some pics I'll be happy to take some, I'm installing the other motor tomorrow. Basically you can have EVERYTHING on the motor, airpump, a/c, PS, belts, starter, etc. Even the downpipe can (and should) be installed before the motor goes in. It took me a few times to learn all this, I learned some stuff the hard way.

If you have pics and stuff that would be GREAT! I was just going to follow the shop manual which I know says to take several things off. Anything that would help would be greatly appericated!
Another question. If I'm going to be working on this thing (hose job.... cleaning... stuff like that) should I invest in an engine stand? I noticed that Mazdatrix sells an adaptor for an engine stand that will hold the rotary for $80... is that really needed?
Thanks for your assistance so far!

Engine stand is not necessary unless you are going to put the engine back together after you dismantle it. Disassembly can be done on the floor.
I used two 4 X4 blocks of wood to support the engine.
I have a pic of this but I don't have a website to host it.
BTW, you may have a bear lurking in your garage - I see huge paw prints on the floor. Be careful

fart on a friends head!!!
you dont even need one of those nifty stand adapters. i have my engine sitting on a stand. i just hooked up the engine to two of the mounts just like the stand adapter is set up. it works great. no need to spend the 100 bucks on that adapter.

**** that gearbox looks so much like the old 4 speed from the RX3. They change everything in the piston motor mazdas between the models and keep everything the same for the rotaries over 30 years. I believe the rear plate of the engine still has the cutout for the old top mounted starter motor, which was abandoned sometime around when I was three years old (that was a loong time ago
I had to change the clutch on my rx3 one day but it was raining, so I rolled it down to the local church and did it in their entrance. Half way through the priest arrived and asked me how I was going, I just said I was having a small problem and it would be fixed in no time (trying my best to stand in front of the gearbox on the ground). People were starting to roll up for church as I was putting the centre console back in
