I too have wanted to shave a couple of inches off of the top end of the opening in search of better performance out of my intercooler. I always felt that the intercooler wasnt working up to its potential. Now that i got water injection on the way, i dont so much as care as much as before. Although i would love to see the finished product. There is no such thing as too much intercooling with these cars. Every little thing counts.

Watch out for the flex of the IC componants damaging the bumper/fiberglass

I see the concept you're reaching for, but there are a few physics principles you're missing. You're missing a diffuser section in the front. A diffuser will decrease the air velocity and increase the pressure, both of which are good things for this application. Your 'flush-front' design will let air escape around the IC instead of forcing air through it.

Here is a quick MSpaint diagram of how the diffuser will help:

Read pages 555-559 of Race Car Vehicle Dynamics, by Milliken & Milliken. ( ISBN: 1-56091-526-9 ), you should be able to find it on Amazon.com

Good luck,

kinda cool. if i had the skills, i would also try and do some kind of inlet to divert air under the FMIC to the radiator.

I think it looks good, but I'm a fan of the 'big intercooler scaring people' look.

New pic

Here is an updated pic. All the edges are smoothed out and the entire bumper cover was primed. This is pretty much what it will look like when completed.

You think 99 or R1. Any idea how much the R1 lips sell for. I haven't looked yet.

You can get an R1 lip from www.rx7.com for 265 bucks. I definitely think that the R1 would look best.

Looks like a hairlip

Or like when you dry your upper front teeth, then fold your lip under... ever do that as a kid?

I personally like the 99 lip better and that's what I have on mine, but it is mostly personal preference....

I think the 99 lip will look better....

Another reason why I like the 99 lip is that since it streches out to the front more than the R1 it also acts like a front splitter to help direct air to the mouth of the front bumper..

Good call. I think I'll go with the '99.

Go with the 99spec, I like the R1 lip on some cars but I have a 99 and love the look.
