I kinda have the same problem going on with mine. Is the idle fluctuating and are you getting smoke. Mine is running really really rich and I get lots of black smoke reeking of fuel. We think it is a stuck open injector, so I'm in the process of replacing all my injectors now.

Check your injectors if your smelling gas, cause if they're leaking you have a serious problem that you need to fix pronto. This may be causeing your idle problem too, cause I had the same problem.

Keep in mind that if one of the "cylinders" had a cracked apex seal, the gas and air will not compress correctly and will cause a rich like smell/feel.
Most of the time it's the rear that goes, so, a cheap, quick, not 100% like the real mazda compression tester, way to check is to crank it over and listen for even pops. Any evidance of a weak or weak pops is usually an apex seal. Usually you'll hear one good followed by two weaker pops on a nuked engine. You can do the poor-mans compression test with the shraeder alve removed also. Look for a variance in the compression readings. Do the same for the front if the rear checks out.
