A Couple Of AC Questions

Hey Guys,

Ok, I am in the process of chargin my AC system right now. Now I found the low pressure service port and realized that the system is the stock R12 system, so am working on getting an adapter to have it fit up to the R134 line system I have. Now a couple of questions I have are:

For a Stock FD ('93), a can of R134a is the proper charge material to use, right?

Also, I was reading and came across an oil refill of the AC system as well in addition to the refrigerant refill. Anybody have any links on where the oil needs to be refilled and what the procedure is for that?

My first bit of advice is to take this job to a professional with the proper equipment and have them do it instead of trying to use recharge cans from the auto parts store. One reason is that the system should be fully evacuated. This vacuum procedure will pull all the moisture out of the system and allow it to fully recharge so you don't wind up with some half *** cooling.

As to the oil, it's necessary, and you can find cans that contain just this lubricating oil, but most refrigerant will have it already mixed in.

Oh, yeah......unless the system has been converted, a 93 uses R12....only the 95's had 134a. I'm trying to be kind here........I don't think you have the technical knowledge and expertise to succesfully accomplish this job. Take it to a good A/C shop. Unless your system has a leak, it really won't be that expensive.

Among other things, the FD's with 134a have a different condenser, so putting 134a in a system designed for R12 will never work as well as in a system that was designed for 134a. It would be better to stick with R12 or go for a full 134a conversion.

Thanks for the advice Jconn, I yeah I realizes about a half hour ago maybe I'm in a bit over my head, so I'm gonna take it in and get it done at a shop. Good point about the moisture though, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

i dont think they even sell r12 anymore do they?

Yes, they do. The old, and recovered, supply has lasted a lot longer than they expected it to. It's gotten a bit more expensive.....I haven't priced it lately.....but it still may be cheaper than converting your system. So, if you have an R12 system I'd investigate recharging it before I decided to convert to 134a.
