Cool Could bad air filter cause boost problems?

Hey guys just needed a little help here.

I have never changed my stock air filter in over the 2 years of ownership and who knows when it was changed before me. I have opened and looked at it and it didn't seem too too dirty although a couple spots on it were black. I washed it out and dried it really good even though it wasn't a clean and reusable filter. It was just a band aid till I got a drop in K&N filter.

I don't have the K&N right now, just teh old stocker. I get perfect boost except when closing in on redline. I know it's supposed to drop boost off a little before redline but this is too much too early. I get 10-8-10 then it will drop around 6.5k to around 6 to 7 psi. I think I'am running out of breath here and so it's not boosting to it's fullest. Is this a possible reason having a old dirty filter?

Mods are listed. isn't it strange I get 10 psi boost with a gutted main cat 3" exhuast all the way(excpet the gutted main cat 2.5" I believe). Or I think a vacuum hose might be collapsing but I had them recently checked and they are fine.

Thank you,
Jonas

Sounds like you might have a boost leak somewhere in your IC system

Yeah... I agree w/SP... However... it wouldn't hurt to check the coupler hose at the "Y" pipe... I know when I inspected mine there was a "nail" size hole I hadn't noticed... I've since changed that out for a good silicone one... Also, check all your clamps on the compressor side and pay attention to the top of your intercooler... sometimes they'll begin to fail and leak at the seams... look for sign of oil.

One other place to inspect is the "Y" pipe itself. It has a rubber "O" ring gasket that over time will begin to leak... again, look for signs of oil.

I think I'am getting a little more than the usual oil in the intake but that's about it. My car has been done over so many times for leaks it ain't even funny. I have a silicone coupler for the y-pipe so it should be good. If a little more than the usual oil is coming from my vented BOV what's happening. It's not like it's a flood or a spray just some lining.

Shame on you for not changing the filter more often! In my experience a clean air filter definitely makes a noticeable improvement in performance. I’m really surprised that the original filter didn’t just disintegrate when you washed it. What did you use?

definately sounds like the filter is choking the turbos after transition.....change it and watch that boost go!
