Im new here but didnt see this thread around so I thought it might be nice to have one that gives a general idea of what to expect on a part install (ie intake, exhaust, timer, etc etc etc).
My first question is:
How much is an install on a short throw shifter?
Please list your install costs as you upgrade so people can get an idea of what they are in for

you are wasting SO much money if you have someone else install a shifter. for a pizza and a beer, you can probably get someone on here to do it for you. same with intake. my apex'i was a 2 hour job...

 

it took you 2 hours to install an apexi intake?

 

There are a few tricks but overall it was a straight forward install. Maybe an hour or so. If you were closer I would in fact do it for the pizza and beer if offered.

Well, if anyone is in the DC Metro area, the pizza and beer stands.
I usually install my own intakes but some are not mechanically challenged. I just think its nice to know what you are getting into. A $100 part and a $500 install could be a suprise for some people

 

I did my Apexi dual power intakes with a friend helping and it took 2 hrs. Was stock before, the instructions in Japanese, and wasn't hard to figure out. I recommend a stuby 10mm wrench for the install.

When I did my shifter, there was just this one nut that was a big pain to get to. I spent the better part of an hour trying various wrenches, vice grips and whatever else I could find to get at it. Eventually I loosened it and the got the new shifter on, I don't know if this is the problem you're experiencing, but if so just keep at it, the short shifter is a great mod. Also, there are write ups with pics on the install around somewhere, you just need to search. If not on the forum, the www.scuderiaciriani.com (I think I spelled it right) may very well have one. havent bought one yet. Was thinking of a B&M shifter. If anyone has any recommendations, I am open.

i installed the shifter and the intake myself. I would do everything on your own, so you know how to work on the car, and i think its fun. The shifter is easy as hell, that only took me 15min. The intake took 30 min because the god damned hoses were stuck tight as hell on the stock intake.

 

I have the B&M unit, and I like it a lot. The shorter throw is much nicer than the stock shifter. After using a B&M, the stock shifter feels really inaccurate (the B&M allows you to *really* feel the gates).

As far as the install goes, it can be done in under an hour, if you knew what you were doing. The hard part is getting a wrench in such a tight spot without dropping a bolt into the tranny tunnel.

 

took me 2 hours... yes, i know that's a long time for a simple task... BUT, in my defense, i was just being rediculously sure, double, tripple checking everything. i also figured out how to mount it with all three of the little tie straps (the metal pieces) to hold it on nice and tight... along with sponge cleaning the area of my engine bay that was around the 'ole air box and removing all the unnecessary mounts.

 

Well, atleast thats good. On my old 3kgt, the stillen intake took me about an hour to install. They used plastic bolts from the airbox to the hose.

Cool, thanks. Its always good to know others around the area. She is getting a tune up now. New vacume (spelling) hoses, guages, etc. Hopefully RP will have her out of the shop soon.

 

it took me like an hour to do my blitz sus intake with hard pipes

my short shifter is coming though, dont know how long that will take..

 

I just ordered a Gotham Short Shifter for 105 bux its a B&M rip off... Also that included shipping its in the for sale section by jesus cookies. Its just as good as the B&M just doesnt have the blue paint on the base of the shifter. Anyways the install is straight forward just remove it and put new one in there is also a ring you are suppose to install on the short shifter thats off your old shifter and just bolt it on preety simple.

i heard and looked up some sites and it looked pretty simple, just 4 bolts and replace the ring and you're set..

 

I think I am going to spend the extra couple of bucks for the B&M just for the warranty etc.

Hmmm....seems like we need a FD drinking night. Although, I will be driving the 3000gt until the FD gets out of the shop. Dont know how much work will get done though.

 

As for working on it, I need a place to do it. My condo assoc looks down on that and my neighbors are OLD and cranky. lol

 

If you go with a B&M shifter it is really easy, and fairly inexpensive. It took me 15 minutes to do. I would like to recommend calling up Malloy mazda and ordering the bushing that are in the shifter. I think they cost 15 dollars or less total and will tighten things right up.

On another note, from your name on here and your profile, it looks to me like you graduated from Syracuse University?? What field were you in? I am going there now for chemical engineering. It's definately not easy.
