Cooling fans come apart??? R&T article

Sorry if this has been posted already but it gave me a serious case of the "WTFs?"

Road & Track did their "used car classic" review on the FD and one thing they said to look out for was: "The electric fans-there are two- frequently come apart, perhaps launching a blade into the radiator." WTF? I've had an FD for 5+ years and been on the forum just as long and have never heard about this happening. It seems more likely for the whole car to spontaneously combust than for the fans to come apart like that.

They talked to Cam @ Pettit for the article, though they didn't site him in their checklist that included the fan thing.

Yea, I was wondering the exact same thing when I read it. Maybe it was a recall or something?

Have no idea where R&T (or Cam) would've gotten that from. The ABS plastic used for the fan assembly is pretty stout. I've seen one post here from someone a long time ago stating that his fan assembly came apart at the fan motor spindle (causing it to wobble on the axis), but I'd hardly call that "frequently"...
