Coolant Leak

I have searched all forums for some info but have found nothing.
I drive a 96 FD, no mods except K&N Air Filter.
Car has 85k and is driven everyday.
Lately I have been losing some coolant, and have been looking for all possible leaks with none found. Just the other day I had been driving the car when the coolant buzzer came on and the car over heated...I parked the car and let it cool down. Later I topped the coolant up - via the engine block - and found that I was about 2 cups low on coolant...nothing major. The car started fine, and drove well, but once I stop in traffic the coolant buzzer would sound and the gauge would go up?? Got the car home and after switching off could hear coolant bubbling around the Turbo area. I took the airbox and Air pump out but couldnt find a leak...put back together and all OK...I waited until the engine was cold and checked the coolant - it was low - topped it up (including the AST). Next morning checked it again and coolant had dropped??? There is minor water dropplets/white foam inside the oil cap...but it doesnt seem to be an O ring failure?? I dumped the oil and found no water in the pan? I also took the sparkplugs out and they look perfect - grey in colour??
I was driving the car home yesterday and the car drove fine...got to a main road and went to gun it and the car hesitated and spluttered as soon as it hit 2500rpm? The car wouldn't go above 2500rpm so drove it carefully home?
Let it cool, checked everything...there was still a loss of coolant so topped up...overflow reservoir was full...but engine was a cup short? Took the car for another drive later and car was fine.. it redlined and turbo boost sequence is fine?
Are my turbos on the way out or is the engine stuffed?? The car is regularly serviced and regularly thrashed!! Could the turbos be overheated and the turbo sensor then stops the car over revving??Any feedback would be helpful.
Has anyone else had this problem??

hey .. just wanted you to know that i went through the exact same thing and still going through it infact
my fd kept loosing coolant every day .. and i kept filling it up but never saw where it was going.. there were no leaks.. I had a coating of creamy looking stuff in the oil cap
the most imporant thing is to do is get a pressure test..
replace both caps..
another thing that i did was take off the over flow tank and i had a thick layer of brown gunk at the bottom and in the line that goes to the AST which i think was making the vaccum sequence when the coolant kools down to suck coolant out of the overflow.. so thats why it was so low when the coolant was under pressure it over flowed and then when it cooled down it cant get coolant out the over flow..
since i did that i have still been loosing coolant but i can still see the cooland in the filler neck so there isnt too much being lost..
but non the lest you have to be able to accept the worst. which i am also trying to avoid dealing with and thats a bad seal..
here are some links and some threads with some good info and symptoms..
hope that everything works out for you . but prepare your self for the worst..

I have just spoken to my Rota mechanic and he thinks it may be the cap, but will do a pressure check tomorrow to confirm the worst or best.
I have no smoke or start up hassles so it may be a minor seal leak as your other forum links indicated...thanks for that! I will start my car up tonight and see if I can spot any bubbles coming up...if I have none I presume that all is OK and that my radiator cap/AST cap needs to be replaced. Woo hoo!! Otherwise it looks as though I will be in debt for a while.
I had a 79 Rx7 before this one and had an O'Ring failure...cost me $3500 back then...I hate to think what it will cost to rebuild a 13BTT!! Lots of work!!
Thanks for your help!

I just had my turbos rebuilt. I got a stage one BNR done to them. I drove the car around for about 500 miles and I started to leak coolant. I could smell the antifreeze but couldn't find out where it was leaking. I thought it might have been the line that went to the throttle body, so I got the block off plates. That didn't do it. Finally after a few months we found out it was a coolant line on the turbos. We replaced it and it is fine. You never mentioned if you had puddles of antifreeze under your car. I did, that is what lead me to believe that it was a coolant line somewhere. Anyway hopes this helps.

I checked the turbo rubber coolant lines and they are both fine. I dont have any coolant under my car...but I can smell coolant...I think its my reservoir.
However, after shutdown I can hear bubbling around the turbo area...I think that could be some of the problem...I will check radiator cap and bubbles in the system tonight and see if that helps?? Thanks for the reply...its great to see so many rotaheads out there...they are truly a magic car!!
