coolant

hey guys, i was wondering about coolant. how much will the rx7 hold completely. would a gallon be good to last a while? of evans that is. should i buy a few gallons at a time? and the evans site said that the coolant lasts somewhere around 100,000 miles or something like that. do you guys leave it that long? and it also says you can have it in an unpressuriezed system. do the guys that run it buy low pressure caps for they coolant system??? thanks for any info, its appreciated.

I just did a conversion to Evan's last weekend. If your cooling system is stock (radiator), two gallons should hold you, but you should probably pick up three in case you get a leak or something (you can't just put water in once you convert to Evan's, you need to add Evan's).

I'm running under pressure for a couple of weeks, and then I switch to 0psi.

And the Evan's site says the coolant can last for like 500,000 miles, if it doesn't get contaminated. I'm really not worried about the engine outliving the coolant, so 100,000 should be enough...

Just follow the instructions and get all of the water out of the system. I did two full flushes with Sierra before putting in the Evan's, and don't forget to remove your engine block drain plug. There is a lot of coolant in there.

Sierra is your bridge to Evan's. Evan's is non-aqueous, meaning it doesn't like water (water would contaminate it). Sierra has the same basic ingredient as Evan's, and it absorbs/mixes with water. So, flushing with Sierra (I did two full flushes since it's cheap) helps remove any excess water after you drain your coolant.

Sierra is a more pet/kid safe antifreeze, and it's available at all of the major auto parts stores (the chains such as Pep Boys or Checkers or Auto Zone).

Oh, and flushing is when you fill your coolant system, let the car run till warm, let it cool, and then empty it.

You should flush at least once or twice with distilled water before converting to get crap out of the system. I also used a radiator cleansing product, again, available at auto parts stores. The cleansing product should be your first flush if you plan on using it.

Now, doing several flushes takes a few days as you have to let the coolant cool down before you can drain it (especially the engine block, which stays hot a long time).

I spent 4 days doing this. I could have done it in three, but I was lazy (4 water flushes, 1 with cleanser, 2 Sierra, fill with Evan's).

And when you are "flushing" the system, have your heater set to hot on high fan. Once the vent air gets warm (your thermostat has opened) let the car run for a couple of minutes to let everything flow through. Then you can shut it off and let it cool for the next drain.

Also, don't forget to empty the overflow tank. Get a sucker tool (looks like a large turkey baster) and get all of the water out of there. Make sure to fill and empty it when you flush with Sierra.
